Schmidt Scores Two in UNH Victory over Stony Brook

Schmidt's fifth and sixth goals of the season clinch a playoff berth for the Wildcats.
DURHAM, N.H. – University of New Hampshire men's soccer has officially clinched a spot in the 2017 America East Tournament, thanks to two goals from Robin Schmidt (Cologne, Germany) in a 2-0 victory over the Stony Brook Seawolves Saturday evening at Wildcat stadium.
Schmidts two goals were assisted by Alex Valencia (Tracy, Calif.) and Jack Doherty (Meridan, N.H.) and both occured in the second half, after UNH and Stony Brook played to a 0-0 draw after 45 minutes.
Goalkeeper Andrew Pesci (Windham, N.H.) got his ninth shut out of the season, stopping both shots he faced in the game. His record is now 11-1-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The first half saw no shots on goal, with UNH taking four total shots and Stony Brook taking two.
- The Wildcats had several opportunities off of six first-half corner kicks, but none resulted in a shot on net.
- In the second half both teams began to register shots on net, with Stony Brook taking the first one on a long service that curled in towards the net, easily saved by Pesci.
- Schmidt's first goal came in the 67th minute, as Valencia found him at the top of the box and he was able to beat the keeper in the lower right side of the net to break the tie.
- Pesci's second save came just a few minutes after the UNH goal, as a Stony Brook striker attempted to beat him with a shot to the low left corner of the goal, but a diving stop saved the shutout.
- Schmidt's second goal came in the 90th minute, as Doherty caught the Stony Brook defense out of position and sent a through ball up field to Schmidt. It was a race to the ball between Schmidt and the Stony Brook 'keeper, Jacob Braham, which Schmidt won out and was able to dribble toward an empty net. Despite an approaching defender trying for a last minute save, Schmidt tapped the ball into the net to seal the victory in the final minute.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Pesci only needed two saves for his ninth shutout of the season.
- The Wildcats only took two shots on goal, both resulted in goals.
- New Hampshire out-shot Stony Brook 9-5 overall in the game.
- Valencia's assist was his third of the season, Doherty's his third.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- With the win, the Wildcats are one of four teams to clinch an America East Tournament spot.
- The win puts the Wildcats at a five-game winning streak and a six-game unbeaten streak.
- The Wildcats improve to 4-1-0 on the season; they are tied in first place in conference with the Vermont Catamounts; the Catamounts and the Wildcats will finish the regular season in a match at Wildcat Stadium on November 1st.
