Muses, Tanski Record Double-Doubles in 3-1 Win at UMass Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. – Demi Muses (Orangevale, Calif.) recorded 16 kills and 22 digs – both match highs – to lead the University of New Hampshire volleyball team to a 3-1 victory against UMass Lowell at Costello Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. The set scores were 25-16, 25-16, 24-26, 25-11.
UNH won its fourth consecutive match – all in conference play – to improve to 11-8 overall and 4-0 in America East. The Wildcats had a strong, balanced attack with three players in double-digit kills and a .272 team hitting percentage; on the defensive side, four players recorded double-digit digs.
UMass Lowell is now 5-14, 0-4.

The Difference
New Hampshire had a .444 hitting percentage in the first set and a .300 mark in the second set to take a 2-0 lead. The Wildcats finished with a .272 hitting percentage in comparison to the River Hawks' .070 that included .000 in the first set and .029 in the second.

UNH won the first point on a kill by Bowman and never trailed the remainder of the set. The Wildcats opened with three consecutive points and built a 7-2 lead on the strength of four kills by Smith. A service ace by Muses pushed the advantage to 11-4 and prompted UML to call time out. The River Hawks responded with a 5-1 spurt to close within 12-9. The score remained close until UNH won three consecutive points to build a 21-14 lead. The teams exchanged points before the 'Cats closed out the set on a 3-0 run, 25-16.
-2nd set-
UMass Lowell took a 2-0 lead and led 3-1 before New Hampshire responded with a 3-0 spurt to take a 4-3 lead. With the score tied 5-5, UNH inched away to a 9-7 lead and another three-point run pushed the margin to 12-7. An exchange of points made the score 15-12 before kills by Smith and Tanski and two UML errors gave the 'Cats a 19-12 edge. The River Hawks never got closer than six points the rest of the set, which ended on back-to-back kills by Smith and Muses at 25-16.

UMass Lowell came out strong to build a 4-0 lead but UNH responded with the next three points to close within 4-3. Trailing 7-4, the Wildcats reeled off four straight points – kills by Muses and Smith sandwiched a pair of UML attack errors – to take an 8-7 lead. New Hampshire led 11-8, then the teams traded a series of two consecutive points to push the score to 13-12 in favor of UNH. The River Hawks leveled the score at 15 and 17 before the Wildcats called a timeout and went on a 3-0 spurt to go ahead 20-17. The home team went on a 4-1 run to tie the set, 21-21, and surged ahead 24-22 on the strength of back-to-back service aces by Elima Ahzi. The 'Cats rallied to forge the seventh tie score of the set, 24-24, but the home team replied with a Katherine Claybaugh Kill and Delaney Mendez service ace to force another set.

With Keelin Severtson serving to start the set, UNH jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead en route to a 7-1 advantage. After the home team won back-to-back points, two more kills by Smith helped keep the River Hawks at bay, 10-3. The Wildcats led 13-6 when they won five consecutive points on Smith's serve – two aces and two Muses kills fueled the run – to build a commanding 18-6 lead. Tanski served out the match as part of a 5-0 run and final set score of 25-11.
'CAT NIPS
Tanski now has a team-leading eight double-doubles this season. Muses is next with six. This was the third match of the season both Tanski and Muses recorded a double-double; it previously happened Sept. 17 vs. Sacred Heart University and Sept. 30 against UMBC.
Muses' 22 digs matches the highest total by a UNH Wildcat in 2016; Tanski was credited with 22 digs in a five-set win at Boston College.
UNH NOTEBOOK
This marked the fifth time this season that four Wildcats tallied 10-plus digs as well as the fourth time that three 'Cats finished with double-digit kills. It is the third time UNH achieved both feats; it previously occurred Sept. 3 at Boston College and Sept. 20 vs. Northeastern University.
