Belanger Hits For 24 Points In Women's Hoops Loss At Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Senior guard Elizabeth Belanger (Acton, Mass.) poured in 24 points, but Vermont pulled away in the second half to top the UNH women's basketball team, 83-63, in Patrick Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
Sophomore forward Carlie Pogue (Cincinnati, Ohio) added 17 points and seven rebounds. Senior forward Stephanie Spoto (Pittsford, N,Y.) contributed nine points, seven rebounds and three assists. Sophomore guard Peyton Booth (Wadsworth, Ohio) had nine points and five rebounds.
UNH fell to 7-13 overall and 1-6 in America East. The Catamounts are also 7-13 overall and improved to 2-5 in the league.

The UMBC game closes out UNH's first run through America East this season. The Wildcats play Binghamton on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. in Lundholm for their You Can Play Night game to start the second half of the league season.
Belanger moved up a spot to No. 8 on the UNH career scoring list. She has 1,284 career points and passed Candace Williams, who scored 1,277 points from 2006-10, on Wednesday night.
Belanger also had five rebounds and a couple of steals in the game.
Andreana Thomas and Kylie Atwood each scored 20 points for Vermont.
UNH had a 39-30 edge in rebounds. But Vermont made 26 of its 54 shots (48.1 percent) and was 10-for-19 (52.6 percent) on its three-pointers.
The Wildcats were 25-for-64 (39.1 percent) from the field and 4-for-16 (25 percent) from behind the three-point line.
The Wildcats cut Vermont's lead to 52-49 on a Booth three-pointer with 1:08 to play in the third quarter. But the Catamounts ran off 10 straight points into the fourth quarter and stretched the run to 15-1 to open a 67-50 lead.
The Catamounts were up 33-30 at the half.
Pogue had 12 points and six points in the first half. She scored nine straight UNH points in one stretch in the second period.
Vermont had opened a 31-20 lead with 2:36 left in the half, when Pogue went to work underneath. She scored on a couple of foul shots, made a basket inside and then was fouled as she made another basket and converted the opportunity into a three-point play. It was her second and-one of the half.
Belanger had eight points and three rebounds in the first half. Spoto came off the bench to add six points and four rebounds.
