Taylor's Triumph Paces Skiing To Third-Place Finish at Dartmouth Carnival

LYME CENTER, N.H. & CRAFTSBURY, Vt. – University of New Hampshire senior women's Nordic skier Annika Taylor (Truckee, Calif.) registered her third victory of the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association season in Saturday's 10K freestyle race to lead the Wildcats to third place overall at the Dartmouth Carnival.
UNH finished in third place (of 16 schools) for the third straight carnival with 791 points. Vermont recorded 926 points for the victory, and Dartmouth was the runner-up (841 points).
Taylor, who is featured in the Faces in the Crowd section of this week's Sports Illustrated, crossed the finish line at Craftsbury Nordic Center in 30 minutes, 20.5 seconds to tally 50 of New Hampshire's event-winning 116 points; she won the race by 31.4 seconds over runner-up Heather Mooney of Middlebury. Katrin Larusson (Truckee, Calif.) notched a fifth-place finish for 45 points in 31:42.7, and Hannah Peterson (Durango, Colo.) placed 13th in 32:45.7 for 27 points.
Raleigh Goessling (Esko, Minn.) headlined the men's Nordic efforts in Saturday's 10K free with a fourth-place finish. The freshman crossed the line in 26:30.2 for 39 points. Eirik Fosnaes (Hovik, Norway) finished in eighth place for 31 points in 26:59.7, and Tyler Quinn Smith (Park City, Utah) racked up 25 points by virtue of his 14th-place time of 27:23.9. With 95 points, UNH finished second to UVM (132).
At Dartmouth Skiway, the 1-2 punch of Coley Oliver (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Phil Rivet (Saint-Lambert, Quebec) guided the Wildcats to third place in the men's slalom. Oliver dashed down the hill in 47.46 seconds to record the fastest second-run time among all competitors; his combined time of 1 minute, 38.60 seconds was good for fifth place and 39 points. Rivet was on his heels in a time of 1:38.73 for sixth (37 points). Charlie Kidd (Toronto, Ontario) timed in at 1:40.61 for 23rd place (22 points). UNH finished in third place, behind Vermont (135) and Middlebury (106).
In the women's SL, Randa Teschner (Petawawa, Ontario) paired a first run of 52.68 seconds with a second run of 54.14 for a total time of 1:46.82 and sixth place (37 points). Lisa Wedsjö (Saltsjöbaden, Sweden) placed seventh (35 points) in 1:48.13, and Celine Guilmineau (Edwards, Colo.) finished in 13th place (1:49.70/29 points). With 101 points, UNH finished third behind Dartmouth (128) and UVM (116).
Recapping Friday's action, the Wildcat women's Nordic team finished second to Middlebury (118 points) in the classic sprint with 107 points. Taylor finished in third place (44 points), Maddy Pfeifer (Andover, N.H.) placed eighth (33) and Larusson took 10th (30). Quinn Smith paced the UNH men with a fifth-place finish (39 points) in Friday's classic sprint, Goessling finished 12th for 28 points and Fosnaes earned 17th place for 26 points. The 'Cats finished third with 93 points, behind Vermont (138) and Dartmouth (100).
In Friday's giant slalom, Teschner led the way for the UNH women's alpine team with a combined time of 1:59.64 for ninth place and 37 points. Wedsjö was just 0.26 seconds off that time for 10th place and 35 points. Rozinowicz rounded out the scoring with a two-run time of 2:02.13 for 19th place (26 points). UNH finished with 98 points to place behind Dartmouth (138) and Vermont (110).
The men's alpine team finished Friday's GS in fifth place with 83 points. Oliver secured a Top-10 finish in 1:56.50 for eighth place (33 points), Rivet clocked in at 1:56.68 for 11th place (29 points), and Bryan Cookson (Vernon, British Columbia) finished in 23rd place (1:57.93/21 points).
The EISA circuit moves to the Middlebury Carnival on Feb. 13-14. Alpine races are scheduled for the Middlebury Snow Bowl and Nordic events are slated for the Rikert Nordic Center.
