AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of New Hampshire women's soccer team rallied late to notch the game up 1-1 in regulation but it was not enough as the 'Cats came short in double overtime 2-1 against the University of Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon from Rudd Field.
With the loss, the Wildcats hold a mark of 1-4-0 on the season while the Minutewomen improve to 2-3-1 overall.
UNH Sophomore netminder Mimi Borkan (Medfield, Mass.) and UMass goalkeeper Cassidy Babin made six saves each in the game.
UMass held a slight edge in shots 5-3 in the first 45 minutes of action resulting in a scoreless half.
The Minutewomen netted the first goal of the game in the 47th minute as Megan Burke converted on a penalty kick.
With just one minute remaining in the game the 'Cats offense was able to put a goal together past Babin. Freshmen Brooke Murphy (Monson, Mass.) posted the game-tying goal as senior co-captain Meghan Ledwith (Yardley, Pa.) paved the way for the assist, her first of the year. The goal marks Murphy's second of her career.
In the first overtime, UMass took two shots while New Hampshire posted one. Both goalkeepers garnered a save each.
The Minutewomen scored the game-winning goal in the 102nd minute. Jackie Bruno took the close range shot in front of Borkan as it slipped past her. Daniela Alveraz got credit for the assist.
New Hampshire was outshot 24-11; six of those shots for the Wildcats came in the second half. UMass garnered 9 corner kicks while UNH had two.
The team returns to Durham for a night game Thursday, Sept. 11 against Bryant University at Bremner Field (7 p.m.).
