Women's Soccer Opens Conference Play With A 1-0 Win Over Vermont

DURHAM, N.H. - Freshman Brooke Murphy (Monson, Mass.) scored 15 minutes into the game as the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team defeated the University of Vermont 1-0 Sunday afternoon to open America East play from Bremner Field.
The Wildcats improves 4-6-0 on the year and stand with a 1-0-0 mark in America East. The Catamounts fall to 2-7-1 on the young season and 0-1-0 in the conference.
New Hampshire out shot Vermont for the match (23-10). UVM garnered two corner kicks (all in the second half) compared to UNH who earned one.
Sophomore netminder Mimi Borkan (Medfield, Mass.) was credited with the win stopping four shots in the process. Borkan now has posted four clean sheets on the season surpassing her record of one last year.
Vermont goalkeeper Ally Raymos made six saves in the match in 90 minutes of action between the pipes.
Murphy paced the Wildcats with six shots while senior Caroline Murray (New Canaan, Conn.) and senior co-captain Meghan Ledwith (Yardley, Pa.) posted four each. Murphy leads the team with 25 shot attempts and Ledwith with 24 through 10 games. Sophomore Morgan Smith (Canton, Conn.) posted three and junior Kellie McGoldrick (Ambler, Pa.) posted two shots of her own as Ramos saved one of them in the 70th minute.
UNH opened the game with four straight shots against the Catamounts as Smith mustered two of those shots. Murphy netted her fifth goal of the season 15:28 into the game past Ramos off of a tip in as Ledwith paved the way for the assist (second of the season).
At the end of the first half UNH held a 10-2 shot margin over UVM.
The 'Cats offense added 13 shots in the second half. In the 57th, 58th and 59th minute New Hampshire posted three straight shots. Freshman Veronica Hardy (North Smithfield, R.I.) blasted a shot but it went high, her lone attempt of the game.
The Catamounts tried to kick the offense into high gear in the second half as they took seven shots on net but it was not enough as the Wildcats held their ground.
Up next, the Wildcats hit the road for another conference game against Albany on Thursday, Oct. 2 (7 p.m.).
