DURHAM,
N.H.— The University of New Hampshire women's
gymnastics team improved to 8-1 on the season with an impressive
194.975-188.30 victory over Brown at Lundholm Gym on Friday evening
that included several personal bests and UNH records broken.
The Wildcats were led by junior all-arounder Chelsea
Steinberg (Ridgewood, N.J.), who had her best meet ever
for UNH as she recorded her career-high in the all-around for first
place with a score of 39.350, the highest mark by an EAGL gymnast
this season through this week and the third-highest mark of the
season in the Northeast Region. Steinberg placed first on vault
with a score of 9.85 to tie her personal best, fifth on bars with a
personal best 9.75, second on beam (9.85) and second on floor with
a personal-best 9.9.
As a team, the Wildcats once again excelled on bars, breaking the
previous UNH record of 49.175 in 2004 by posting a 49.3 vs. Brown.
One of the keys to the record was an outstanding performance by
sophomore Alison Carr (Chelmsford, Mass.) who
captured first place in the event with a career-best 9.95, which
places her tied for first all-time at UNH with Karen Olson and
Mariana Pena Trestini.
Senior Helena Diodati (Scarborough, Maine) also
had a huge evening for the Wildcats as she recorded a 9.80 on vault
to earn second place, a 9.925 on bars, also good for second, and
tying her for fourth all-time for the 'Cats. She also
finished third on beam with a judgement of 9.775.
Other strong performances for the Wildcats included a 9.875 on
balance beam by senior Taryn LaFountain (Utica,
N.Y.) for first place in the event, while senior Julie
Sauchuk (Peabody, Mass.) continues to excel in the floor
exercise, taking first place overall with a 9.925, good for her
career-high in the event.
The Wildcats will return to the road this week when the squad
travels to Michigan State on Feb. 20. The next home meet for the
'Cats will take place on Sat., Feb. 27 vs. Maryland. That
meet begins at 4 p.m. in Lundholm Gym and tickets are available for
all home meets at www.unhwildcats.com.
