PISCATAWAY,
N.J.—The University of New Hampshire women's
gymnastics team, behind a pair of first-place performances by
junior Chelsea Steinberg (Ridgewood, N.J.), opened the 2010 season
with a 189.725-188.925 victory at EAGL foe Rutgers on Saturday
afternoon.
Steinberg was a key to the win for the 'Cats as she tied for
a first-place score on vault (9.8), placed first on balance beam
with a 9.725 and she finished second on bars overall with a mark of
9.575.
UNH also claimed first-place performances over Rutgers in two other
events as sophomore Danielle Reibold (Horsham,
Pa.) earned first place on bars with a score of 9.725 and junior
Katie Caliendo (Manorville, N.Y.) took top honors
in the floor exercise with a judgement of 9.8 to lead all
performers. Senior Helena Diodati (Scarborough,
Maine) tied Steinberg for first-place on vault with a score of
9.8.
The Wildcats finished 1-2-3 on vault, bars and beam, and took the
top two spots in the floor exercise.
“It was our first meet of the season and I was glad to come
away with the win,” said 31st year head coach Gail
Goodspeed. “We started out on bars, but that was a
disaster for us as we had to count a 7.65. However, the team pulled
together and performed well in the final three events and was able
to come away with the victory.”
The Wildcats will open the home portion of the 2010 season next
weekend when the team will be the host of its own UNH Invitational,
a four-team tournament featuring UNH, Utah State, Ball State and
Yale. The meet will take place on Jan. 17 at 1 p.m. in Lundholm
Gymnasium. Tickets for the invitational and all UNH home gymnastics
events can be bought online at www.unhwildcats.com.
