Carlos Washington, Jr., a redshirt freshman from Fort Washington, Md., had a breakout game to lead the UNH football team to a 34-0 victory at Villanova University on Oct. 27. He was honored as the CAA Football Rookie of the Week on Monday.
Carlos carried the ball 17 times for a career-high 179 yards and two touchdowns to lead UNH to a 34-0 victory against Villanova University at Villanova Stadium on Oct. 27. Those were the first two career scores for the redshirt freshman, who averaged 10.5 yards per carry in the showdown between the Wildcats.
Carlos – New Hampshire’s first 100-yard rusher of the season – set the tone early in the game with a 75-yard TD run on the first play from scrimmage to give UNH a 7-0 lead 12 seconds into the game. It was the team’s longest run since Nov. 17, 2012, when quarterback Andy Vailas had a 77-yard TD run vs. Towson University. Also of note, the 75-yard score marked the longest run by a UNH running back since Sept. 1, 2011, when Nico Steriti had an 87-yard touchdown run at Toledo.
Carlos also scored on a 16-yard scamper that extended New Hampshire’s lead to 24-0 at 4:38 of the second quarter. He opened that four-play scoring drive with a 26-yard run – the fourth longest run by a Wildcat this season.
The rookie running back did a majority of his damage in the first half with nine rushes for 138 yards and two TDs.
Bolstered by Carlos' efforts, UNH recorded season highs in points (34), rushes (43), rushing yards (246) and yards per carry (5.7).
New Hampshire returns to action Nov. 3 at home against James Madison University. Start time at Wildcat Stadium is 1 p.m. and tickets are available online at www.unhwildcats.com, by calling (603) 969-5433 or at the Whittemore Center Box office.
