
Service Credit Union Student-Athlete of the Week: Claire Ronan and Yoofi Abaka-Amuah

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior Claire Ronan (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) of the University of New Hampshire women's track & field team and junior Yoofi Abaka-Amuah (Worcester, Mass.) of the UNH men's track & field team were named the Service Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week on May 5.
Claire won the America East 1,500 meter title and anchored the champion 4x800m relay at the conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at UNH's Reggie Atkins Track & Field Facility on May 4.
Claire was first across the 1,500m finish line with a time of 4 minutes, 37.15 seconds. She was in third place with 800m to go and moved into a tie for the lead at the bell lap. She pulled away in the back straightaway and was the only runner with a sub-68 second last lap of 65.39. As the event champion, Ronan earned 10 points for the Wildcats.
Claire combined with grad student Gabby DeAngelis (Bedford, N.H.), freshman Mia Carbone (Meriden, Conn.) and junior Ella Malone (Barrington, N.H.) to record a winning time of 9:03.53 in the 4x800m. Claire, who received the baton in fourth place, once again demonstrated her finishing speed with an 800m split of 2:13.44 to race past the competition.
With a pair of gold-medal efforts, Claire helped the 'Cats finish second in the final team standings.
The UNH women's track & field team returns to action May 10 for the New England Championships at UMass.
Yoofi won gold in the shot put, silver in the discus and placed fifth in the hammer at the America East Outdoor Championships to compile a total of 22 points toward the UNH team total. He was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer and also received the Coaches' Award for being the athlete who recorded the most individual points at the meet.
Yoofi began the two-day event, which was held at UNH's Reggie Atkins Track & Field Facility, with fifth place in the hammer on Saturday, May 3. And then on Sunday, he bested 20 other competitors in the shot put with a winning throw of 17.99 meters (59 feet, 0.75 inches). He was already atop the leaderboard through four rounds when he unleashed the winning throw on his fifth attempt.
Yoofi concluded the weekend with second place in the discus, where he recorded his top mark of 52.21m (171-3) on his first of six attempts.
UNH finished in sixth place with 81.5 points – Yoofi accounted for 27 percent of the team total.
