Black Bears win shootout to earn extra point
ORONO, Maine – Senior forward Conor Lovett (Franklin, Mass.) scored for the Wildcats as the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team tied No. 5 Maine, 1-1, on Friday night at Alfond Arena in the Border Battle presented by Buffalo Wild Wings. Maine won the shootout, 2-0, to earn the extra point in the Hockey East standings.
Junior goalie Jared Whale (Calgary, Alberta) made 17 saves for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats are now 11-12-4 (3-11-3 Hockey East), while the Black Bears are 18-5-5 (10-3-5 Hockey East).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The first two periods went scoreless as the Wildcats outshot the Black Bears, 15-9, including by a 10-3 margin in the first period.
- The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead at 3:14 of the second period when Lovett lifted the puck from right outside the crease to the upper glove side of the net for the power play goal. Senior alternate captain Connor Sweeney (North Andover, Mass.) and junior forward Kristaps Skrastins (Grobina, Latvia) each posted an assist. The goal was the fourth of the season for Lovett.
- At 15:03 of the third period, the Black Bears went on a power play but the Wildcats were able to keep Maine off the scoreboard.
- With 1:56 remaining in the third, the Black Bears went with the empty net for the extra skater and with 46 seconds left tied the game at 1-1 when Harrison Scott tipped in a shot by David Breazeale.
- After a scoreless overtime, Sully Scholle and Scott each scored for Maine to win the shootout.
