Cookman and Poulakis Score in 3-2 Loss to Northeastern

DURHAM, N.H. – Junior forward captains Tasmin Cookman (London, England) and Nicole Poulakis (Ajax, Ontario) both scored a goal, but the University of New Hampshire field hockey team was edged 3-2 by Northeastern University at Memorial Field on Sunday afternoon.
UNH freshman goalie Abby Johnson (Walpole, Mass.) was credited with one save while NU counterpart Kristi Merashoff made seven saves.
Emma Stubbs scored two goals and Lauren Rowe tallied a goal and an assist for the Huskies.
UNH, which entered the game on a three-game win streak, is now 5-7 overall. NU leveled its record at 6-6.

- The Wildcats continue their eight-game homestand Oct. 11 (2 p.m.) against the University of Vermont.

- Both teams played strong defensively in the opening 15 minutes as UNH had a 2-1 shot advantage but none of the three shots were on goal.

- Northeastern recorded half of its shots in the second quarter and Rowe scored off her own rebound in front to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at 20:30.

- UNH controlled play in the third quarter, which resulted in a 6-1 shot advantage, but both teams scored once to advance the score to 2-1 in NU's favor through 45 minutes.
- In the second minute of the second half, Cookman's dangerous shot was stopped by Merashoff but resulted in a UNH corner. Faye Meijer (Purmerend, Netherlands) was turned aside by the NU goalie.
- The 'Cats earned back-to-back corners in the 36th minute but did not generate a shot.
- On a broken penalty corner, Meijer raced toward midfield to keep possession for the Wildcats and she advanced the ball to Addison MacNeil (Brentwood, N.H.) on the left side. MacNeil's entry from inside the 25 yard line was redirected into the cage by Poulakis at 41:10 to tie the score, 1-1.
- NU earned a corner a minute later and Stubbs redirected Rowe's shot from the top of the circle to put the Huskies back in front, 2-1, at 42:28.

- UNH continued to control play of the game in the final 15 minutes to generate a 10-2 shot advantage, but once again both teams scored once to push the score to 3-2 in NU's favor.
- The Wildcats were awarded four consecutive corners in the 47th minute. The first produced a shot by Meijer that was blocked. On the second corner, Meijer's shot was saved by Merashoff. The third corner yielded both a shot blocked and shot saved off Meijer's stick. On the final corner in the sequence, Cookman's shot was blocked.
- Cookman advanced past a defender at the top of the circle, edged diagonally to the right and blasted a shot into the cage to level the score, 2-2, at 49:31.
- The Huskies had an even quicker response – this time 33 seconds later – to take their third lead of the game, 3-2, at 50:04.
- UNH earned another corner in the 54th minute, and this time Cookman's shot was blocked high of the cage.
- The 'Cats advanced the ball into the circle with 15 seconds remaining and Cookman, deep on the left side, struck a reverse-stick shot that sailed over the crossbar.

- Cookman extended her goal and point streaks to four games; she has five goals and an assist for 11 points during the streaks.
- Cookman ranks second on the team in goals (seven), assists (four) and points (18).
- Poulakis has scored a goal in three of the last four games and a point in 4 of 5.
- She ranks third on the team in goals (five) and fourth in points (12).

- UNH recorded the advantage in shots (19-8), shots on goal (9-4) and penalty corners (9-3).
