Jayden Martinez notched his 1,000th career point in the losing effort for the Wildcats
DURHAM, N.H. – Senior forward Jayden Martinez (Cibolo, Texas) scored 23 points and had seven rebounds, but the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team dropped a 60-55 decision to NJIT on Wednesday night in Lundholm Gymnasium.
The Wildcats are even at 10-10 overall and are 5-6 in America East play. NJIT moved to 10-12 and 5-7.
Martinez came in with 999 career points and wasted little time in getting over the 1,000-point mark with a three-pointer 65 seconds into the game.
He's the second Wildcat to hit the 1,000-point mark in less than three weeks.
Senior forward Nick Guadarrama (Newington, Conn.) missed his second straight game with an injury Wednesday night. Guadarrama scored the 1,000th point of his career in a game at Stony Brook on Jan. 28.
Martinez was 9-for-17 in field goals, including 3-for-6 from behind the arc.
Sophomore guard Blondeau Tchoukuiegno (Montreal, Quebec) had 13 points and six rebounds and led all players with four assists. Grad student forward Chris Lester (Barrington, Ill.) added eight points for the Wildcats and sophomore guard Nick Johnson (Bronx, N.Y.) had seven points and four rebounds.
The Wildcats had a 36-32 edge in rebounds.
UNH plays at Binghamton Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Wildcats return to Lundholm Gymnasium to face UMBC on Monday, Feb. 14 at 4 p.m. They play league-leading Vermont at home Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m.
