Wittel Strikes Again in 2-1 Loss at Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Jaiden Wittel (Stroudsburg, Pa.) scored a goal as the University of New Hampshire field hockey team was defeated 2-1 by Providence College at Lennon Family Field on Friday night.
Junior goalkeeper Jemma Woods (Frimley, England) finished with one save and classmate Ava Mariani (Easton, Pa.) was credited with an assist on Wittel's goal.
Nora Goddard-Despot and Amanda Collins scored for PC, while goalkeeper Asia Porter stopped five shots and Roos Michiels had a defensive save.
UNH is now 1-4 and Providence is 3-2.

FIRST QUARTER
- Neither team tallied a shot nor a penalty corner in the opening 15 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
- Both teams recorded two shots and UNH had a 3-1 edge in corners in the second quarter.
- The Wildcats generated the first corner of the game in the 19th minute, and that produced the first shot – an attempt off the stick of redshirt senior Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands) that went wide of the cage.
- One minute later, PC earned a corner and converted it into Goddard-Despot's goal for a 1-0 lead at 19:50.
- UNH had consecutive corners in the 28th minute, the second of which led to a van den Brekel shot that was stopped by Porter.
THIRD QUARTER
- PC's best quarter statistically was the third quarter, when the Friars had a 4-1 shot advantage and scored the only goal.
- New Hampshire once again had the initial scoring chance, as another corner led to yet another van den Brekel shot, and this one also went wide of the cage.
- Woods denied Niamh Gowing in the 36th minute to keep the 'Cats within one goal.
- Collins scored on a shot from the middle of the circle to push the advantage to 2-0 at 39:11.
FOURTH QUARTER
- UNH generated its best pressure in the final frame with a 6-1 edge in shots.
- In the 54th minute, the Wildcats recorded five shots on goal, two penalty corners, and scored a goal to trim the deficit to one.
- The flurry began with a shot by senior Finn Caron (Hampton, N.H.) that beat Porter but was stopped in front of the cage by Michiels for a defensive save.
- That resulted in a corner, and Mariani was denied on the initial shot as well as the rebound.
- The 'Cats earned another corner and Porter made the save against van den Brekel, but Mariani controlled that rebound and Wittel scored to lift UNH within 2-1 at 53:53.
- Neither team recorded a shot the rest of the way.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- New Hampshire finished with the edge in shots (9-7), shots on goal (7-3) and corners (6-3).
- Including the defensive save, the Friars recorded a total of six saves.
- van den Brekel tallies four shots and Mariani had three.
