Tredwell Makes Career-High Seven Saves in 5-1 Loss to Cal

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Redshirt freshman Nikki Tredwell (Hampton, N.H.) made a career-high seven saves, but the University of New Hampshire field hockey team was defeated 5-1 by the University of California at Moulton-Winder Field (University of Vermont) on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Tia Raspante (Sandwich, Mass.) scored UNH's goal and sophomore Ava Mariani (Easton, Pa.) was credited with the assist.
Cal was led offensively by Maddie Cleat (two goals) and Rachel Buttinger (goal, assist). Cato Knipping was credited with six saves.
UNH ends the Spring 2021 season at 4-8 overall and 1-7 in America East. Cal improves to 3-6, 2-4.
FIRST QUARTER

FIRST QUARTER
- Cal recorded all five shots -- three on goal -- and scored twice in the opening 15 minutes.
- Maddie Cleat scored on the first shot of the game to give Cal a 1-0 lead at 1:48.
- A save by Tredwell denied Megan Connors at 4:09 and Brynn Zorilla's shot off the rebound went wide of the cage.
- Rachel Buttinger, who assisted on the first goal, gave the Golden Bears a 2-0 lead at 13:02.
SECOND QUARTER
- Both the shots (6-6) and corners (2-2) were even in the second quarter.
- Kiki de Bruijne scored on a slap shot from the top of the circle to extend the advantage to 3-0 at 15:58.
- Mariani recorded UNH's first shot of the game in the 18th minute. Her initial shot was stopped by Knipping, and her second shot went wide.
- Tredwell kept the 'Cats within three goals with saves against Kaiden Stanley at 19:31 and de Bruijne at 21:42.
- Cal generated back-to-back corners in the 22nd minute. Zorilla fired wide on the first corner and her shot on the second corner was blocked.
- Mariani fired another shot in the 25th minute, but once again she was denied by Knipping.
- UNH earned its first corner of the game at 25:52 and the shot by sophomore Molly McAteer (Annapolis, Md.) was stopped by Knipping.
- The Wildcats were immediately awarded a second corner. The 'Cats did not record a shot, but earned a penalty stroke. Knipping made the save against sophomore Jaiden Wittel (Stroudsburg, Pa.) to keep the score 3-0 in favor of Cal.
- Raspante converted a centering pass from Mariani into the left corner to trim UNH's deficit to 3-1 with 21 seconds remaining in the first half.
THIRD QUARTER
- Cal had the edge in both shots (6-2) and corners (3-2) in the third quarter.
- UNH's corner in the 34th minute generated a shot by McAteer that rolled wide.
- One minute later at the other end of the field, Tredwell denied Monica Arteaga's shot off a corner. Cleat's shot off the rebound was wide.
- The 'Cats generated a corner in the 38th minute but did not record a shot. A minute later, junior Finn Caron (Hampton, N.H.) struck a shot wide.
- Tredwell once again denied Cleat in the 42nd minute, but then she scored off a rebound at 42:08 to give the designated visitors a 4-1 lead.
FOURTH QUARTER
- New Hampshire had a 3-2 shot advantage and 1-0 edge in corners in the final frame.
- Freshman Reagan Calcari (St. Louis, Mo.) put a shot on goal in the opening minute of the final frame but was turned away by Knipping.
- The Wildcats earned their fifth penalty corner of the game at 45:47 and Caron's shot was blocked.
- Yvie Lock gave Cal a 5-1 lead at 51:41.
- Tredwell made her seventh – and last – save of the game in the 57th minute.
- One minute later at the other end of the field, Mariani recorded her team-high fourth shot of the game and was denied by Knipping for the third time.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- Cal finished with a 19-11 shots advantage that included 12-7 on goal.
- Penalty corners were even at 5.
- Neither team was credited with a defensive save.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Mariani recorded her first assist of the season. She led the 'Cats in both goals (six) and points (13).
- Raspante ends the season with three goals and six points; she ranks third in goals and tied for third in points.
- Tredwell's two starts were the season opener and season finale. She played a total of five games.
- The end of the Spring 2021 season marks the end of UNH careers for seniors Conner Allen (Centreville, Md.), Megan Borneman (Crofton, Md.) and Erin Malone (Crofton, Md.).
- Senior captains Isabelle Danahy (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands) are returning in the fall. Neither played Saturday vs. Cal.
- Calcari made her first career start and played 45 minutes. She entered the game with 26 minutes played in two games.
- Freshman Carolyn Garofoli (Lynnfield, Mass.) was the only Wildcat substitute.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH has a 4-4 lifetime record against Cal.
- Seven of the eight matchups have been at a neutral site.
- This was the first regular-season meeting between these programs since 2006.
- Since then, UNH won 3-2 in the 2017 America East quarterfinals and Cal was a 2-1 winner in the 2019 quarters.
