BOSTON – Junior Cat Sheppard (Nesconset, N.Y.) and freshman Emily Bini (Guilderland, N.Y.) of the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team were named Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, by America East on Tuesday.
Sheppard has received this accolade two of the three weeks in the spring 2021 season, and Bini is the second consecutive UNH player named Rookie of the Week. The Wildcats have received five of the nine weekly awards.
The duo led the Wildcats to a 1-0 overtime victory against the University of Maine in the March 7 conference opener at Wildcat Stadium.
Sheppard was credited with two saves to record the clean sheet vs. Maine and extend her shutout streak to 203 minutes, 7 seconds.
Sheppard kept the game scoreless in the 65th minute with a quick-reflex save. Following a UNH defensive misplay in the penalty area, Maine's Saylor Clark controlled the loose ball and blasted a shot on goal five yards from the left post, but Sheppard made the stop at the near post.
It marked Sheppard's second consecutive shutout, third of the season and eighth career.
Sheppard was also named the conference Defensive Player of the Week on Feb. 23. She has received the award three times in her career.
Bini's thru ball set up the only goal of the game – the golden goal in the 95th minute. Bini controlled the ball at midfield and sent a pass behind Maine's defenders down the left wing to spring Francesca Picicci (North Massapequa, N.Y.), who won the race to the loose ball and scored into the open net.
Bini finished the game with two shots in 87 minutes played. She has an assist each of the last two games and is tied for the team lead in assists with two.
This is the second consecutive week a UNH Wildcat has been named America East Rookie of the Week; Alivia Kelly (Pembroke, Mass.) was last week's honoree.
