Sheppard Records Career-High Eight Saves in 2-0 Loss at UMass Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. – The University of New Hampshire women's soccer team traveled to UMass Lowell for its first road game of 2021. UNH started the season 4-0-0 for the best start in program history, but the River Hawks scored in the 14^th and 84^th minutes to record a 2-0 victory Sunday afternoon at Cushing Field.

Junior goalkeeper Cat Sheppard (Nesconset, N.Y.) recorded six of her career-high eight saves in the first half.

UML goalie Taylor Burgess was credited with five saves. Calliste Brookshire and Gianna DeRose were the goal scorers.

UNH is now 4-1-0 on the season and 1-1-0 in America East. UMass Lowell is 2-1-1, 1-0-0.

UP NEXT

The Wildcats return home Sunday, March 21 at 2 p.m., when they'll face the Vermont Catamounts in an America East matchup.

FIRST HALF

UMass Lowell scored first in the 14^th minute when Brookshire beat UNH around the edge and shot the ball over the right hand of Sheppard.
UNH recorded three shots on net in the first half while UML had seven.
Freshman Alivia Kelly (Pembroke, Mass.) had three free kicks towards the end of the half that were sent towards the net. The third was the most threatening as the ball bounced around in front of the net before the River Hawks cleared it in the 42^nd minute.

SECOND HALF

The River Hawks nearly broke through in the 80^th minute as Sheppard smothered the first attempt and the UML rebound was wide right, and Sheppard made another save.
UMass Lowell attempted a free kick on net in the 84^th minute that Sheppard knocked away. The River Hawks were there to get their own rebound and DeRose pushed their lead to 2-0.
UNH generated one more scoring chance in the 87^th minute but Burgess stopped the shot by freshman Logan Nicholson (St. Augustine, Fla.) aimed at the top-left corner of the net.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

UNH recorded five shots on goal compared to 10 for UML.
The Wildcats lost the corner kicks battle, 4-2.
The River Hawks totaled 19 fouls on the afternoon. UNH was whistled for only seven.
Nicholson recorded two shots on goal; no other 'Cat had more than one.
Senior captain Francesca Picicci (North Massapequa, N.Y.), who entered with a three-game goal-scoring streak, recorded one shot (not on goal).
In the first four games, UNH allowed totals of one goal and nine shots on goal.

SERIES NOTEBOOK

UNH is now 4-2-2 all time against UMass Lowell. This includes a 3-0-1 record at home and 1-2-1 on the road.
Prior to the 2021 loss, the Wildcats beat the River Hawks 5-1 on Halloween in 2019.
New Hampshire has outscored UML 14-7 in their eight meetings.
