No. 23 'Cats, Dartmouth Will Compete for Granite Bowl Trophy
DURHAM, N.H. – The Granite Bowl is back.
The football teams from No. 23-ranked New Hampshire and unbeaten Dartmouth have a little something extra to play for Saturday when they meet in Wildcat Stadium at 1 p.m. for UNH's Family Weekend game.
The schools announced Friday that the Granite Bowl trophy will be awarded to the winner of the contest and the trophy again will be up for grabs each year as the series resumes with six games over the next eight seasons.
UNH holds a 19-18-2 edge in the series that has not been played on a regular basis through the years.
Fans can purchase tickets to Saturday's game at UNHWildcats.com/Tickets or at the UNH Wildcats box office at Gate A at the Boulder Field end of Wildcat Stadium that will open at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Parking in Boulder Field and A Lot across from the UNH Field House is sold out. No parking passes will be sold on gameday. There is free parking available in faculty/staff lots and various other lots within walking distance of the Stadium.
The game is on NBCSports Boston and also will be streamed at FloFootball.
UNH director of athletics Marty Scarano is delighted to see the states two FCS meet.
"It's great to see the two Division 1 football programs competing against one another again," Scarano said. "The Dartmouth vs. UNH rivalry is spirited in all of our programs that compete against each other. It's as it should be in New Hampshire!"
The Wildcats bring a 3-2 overall record into the game and are 2-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
The Big Green are 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Ivy League.
Each team has only league contests remaining after this.
UNH and Dartmouth are scheduled to play those half a dozen games between now and the 2028 season.
They will meet next year on October 15 in Hanover and then return to UNH for a game on Sept. 16, 2023.
They will not play in 2024 or 2026.
Games will be held at Dartmouth in 2025, at UNH in 2027 and then at Dartmouth in 2028.
The Granite Bowl was instituted when the teams booked a string of 10 straight seasons with a game starting in 2000. UNH won all 10 of those games.
The Granite Bowl trophy was not on the line when the teams played their two most recent games in 2014 or 2016. The Wildcats won the 2014 game, 52-19.
Dartmouth knocked off the Wildcats, 22-21, in 2016 in Hanover. The Big Green rallied to win that one after trailing 21-7 entering the fourth quarter.
UNH had gone 18-0-2 against Dartmouth in the 20 games prior to that loss.
In turn, Dartmouth owned the competition in the early years. Dartmouth won the initial game between the teams, 51-0, on Oct. 2, 1901, and won the first 16 games before New Hampshire took a 10-9 win on Sept. 29, 1973.
