Torres Leads Second-Half Surge in 63-50 Loss at UAlbany

Wildcats overcame 15-point deficit before Great Danes fend off comeback
ALBANY, N.Y. – Amanda Torres (Hudson, N.H.) scored a game-high 19 points and led a second-half surge that saw the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team overcome a 15-point deficit to take a fourth-quarter lead, but UAlbany withstood the flurry and came away with Sunday afternoon's 63-50 America East victory at SEFCU Arena.
After falling behind 50-49 with 4:51 remaining, the Great Danes (4-6, 3-3 America East) scored the game's final 14 points to complete the two-game weekend sweep.

Torres (7-for-15 FG, 4-for-4 FT) scored 12 of her 19 points in the second half, added four steals, four assists and three rebounds in a team-high 39 minutes for UNH (4-11, 4-8 AE).
Ivy Gogolin (Hopkinton, Mass.) had 13 points and four rebounds, and Brooke Kane (Derry, N.H.) finished with nine points, five rebounds and three steals. Héléna Delaruelle (Enghien-les-Bains, France) grabbed a team-leading seven rebounds to go along with four points and three assists.
UAlbany's Grace Heeps scored 17 points on 6-for-9 shooting (66.7 percent), which included a 5-for-7 performance from 3-point distance. Heeps hit three straight 3s in the fourth quarter to help the Great Danes close out the victory.
Ellen Hahne led the Danes with 18 points, nine rebounds and six assists. She shot 6-for-11 (54.5 percent) from the floor and 6-for-7 (85.7 percent) at the FT line.
After falling behind 50-49 with 4:51 remaining, the Great Danes (4-6, 3-3 America East) scored the game's final 14 points to complete the two-game weekend sweep.

First Quarter:
- Gogolin staked the Wildcats to a 2-0 lead, but that would be UNH's only lead of the half.
- Another Gogolin bucket and Kane's driving layup cut UAlbany's lead to 8-6.
- The 'Cats drew within 10-9 on Torres' first 3 of the game, but the Great Danes ended the quarter on an 11-2 run to lead 21-11 after one.
Second Quarter:
- Albany edged UNH, 14-11, in the second quarter.
- Mariah Gonzalez (Watkins Glen, N.Y.) sank a pair of free throws to start the offense.
- Gogolin, Adara Groman (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Torres each registered a field goal in the quarter.
- Faith Bonett (Moorestown, N.J.) accounted for the other Wildcat point with a made foul shot.
- Kayla Cooper's two free throws with 31 seconds left staked UAlbany to its largest lead of the game, 35-20.
- Torres ended the half with a runner in the closing seconds to make it 35-22 at the break.
Third Quarter:
- The Wildcats came out of the locker room roaring. UNH outscored UAlbany, 15-8, in the third to trim the Danes' lead to 43-37.
- Torres was at the forefront of a 9-0 run that cut a 14-point deficit (40-26) to five (40-35).
- The senior co-captain parlayed a steal into a runner off a steal to make it 37-26, then finished on the fast break following Kane's steal to make it 40-30.
- With 2:31 left, Kane drained a 3 from the left wing when Groman passed up her own look with the extra pass to make it 40-35.
- Gogolin scored on a pick-and-roll with Delaruelle that made it 41-37 at the 1:44 mark.
- Hahne scored on a layup to build the home team's lead to six in the final minute.
Fourth Quarter:
- Gogolin scored on a drive-and-scoop to start the frame (43-39).
- Groman's steal set up a possession that finished with Delaruelle using a screen to drive the lane and bring UNH within 43-41 at 8:45.
- Kyara Frames buried a deep right-wing 3 for her first basket of the second half, increasing UA's lead to 46-41 with 8:14 left.
- Kane scored on a huge put-back to make it 46-43 at 7:36.
- Torres connected from the right corner with her foot on the arc that made it 46-45 and prompted a UAlbany timeout.
- Following the stoppage, Torres gave UNH its first lead since 2-0 with a crossover, left-side drive that ended with a scoop for a 47-46 lead with 6:12 remaining.
- Gogolin then went 1-for-2 at the line to make it 48-46 (5:37).
- Heeps knocked down a left-wing 3 to erase that lead and, following two Kane made FTs, hit a right-side triple to kick-start the decisive 14-0 run.
- The Great Danes ended the game with six straight made foul shots.
NEXT UP:
- America East announced Sunday adjustments to the next two weeks of games. The Wildcats have an open weekend Jan. 30-31 before visiting UMBC for a two-game series Feb. 6-7. Times and broadcast information will be announced at a later date.
