DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire men's soccer team has been invited to participate in the prestigious Spring College Program endorsed by U.S. Soccer. Due to UNH's recent success on the national stage, the Wildcats will take on top competition in the spring as they prepare for the 2020 season.
The Wildcats' section features Boston College, UConn and Providence, while St. John's, Colgate, Rutgers and Seton Hall are in the other bracket.
Teams will play all three division opponents with a classic scoring system (win – 3 points, tie 1 point) before the playoffs off on April 25 at the New York Red Bulls Training Facility. Each team will appear in a contest in the playoffs playing their counterpart with the division winners facing off for the league championship. UNH will play at 2019 NCAA Tournament participant Boston College on Saturday, April 4 at 5 p.m., while the Wildcats will take on UConn on the road on Friday, April 10 at 7 p.m. UNH will then return to Wildcat Stadium to take on Providence, which advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament, on Friday, April 17 at 7 p.m.
The collaborative initiative between U.S. Soccer and the college soccer programs will provide standards-based competition and further player development opportunities for players above the age of 17. The games also provide an additional opportunity for U.S. Soccer Scouts to identify potential U.S. Olympic and National Team players and expand the player pool.
Aligned with U.S. Soccer's technical framework of best practices for elite youth development, the program will see international standards implemented during each of the games played. The rules for each game played will function similarly to U.S. Soccer Development Academy standards. Games will be played with traditional time keeping, a maximum game day roster of 18 players and no re-entry.
Before participating in the Spring College Program, the Wildcats will kick off the spring schedule when they travel to Gillette Stadium to face the New England Revolution II on Saturday, March 7 at 8 p.m. Also on Saturday, April 18, UNH will hold the fourth annual Roll to the Goal Power Soccer Game with Northeast Passage at 5 p.m.
