DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire women's swimming and diving team supported a half marathon in Durham on Sunday, Nov. 8, sponsored by the Four Rivers Project, a non-profit organization located in the four rivers region of New Hampshire. The organization works to bring clean drinking water to children around the globe. In developing countries in Africa, one in five children under five years old will die of waterborne illnesses because access to clean sources of drinking water do not yet exist.
The race director was former UNH Swimmer Kasey Osgood Dillon '99, a resident of Lee, N.H. Osgood Dillon is very proud of the Wildcats.
"We are so appreciative of members of the UNH women's swimming and diving team who gave of their time to help with the race providing support on the course, giving direction and encouragement to all runners," said Osgood Dillon. "And they were a loud presence at the finish line! We could not have done this event without these women. Together we raised over 15,000 dollars for World Vision, to provide over 280 children with clean water!" The Wildcats at the finish line cheering on participants.
The road race had approximately 50 runners raising money, some locally and some virtually, on a course looping through the UNH campus. The runners were socially distanced and wore masks when running/passing other runners. The team contributed to the set up, marked the course, directed runners and cheered. The Wildcats were inspired by the participants which included a 74 year old husband and wife team finishing the 13 mile half marathon.
Seniors Paige Hillis (Mississauga, Ontario) and Melissa Dingle (Brighton, Ontario) were the point people working with Osgood Dillon.
"We take pride in community outreach and we enjoy helping the community around us as they support our athletic department," said Hillis. "Even as athletes, we were inspired by the people completing the race and we were happy to contribute to such a good cause. Raising money to get clean water to children is so important! We had a great time cheering on the runners and bikers at each station and it was exciting to meet members of the Durham community."
