UNH and URI go to overtime for the second straight season.
DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire women's soccer team fell to the University of Rhode Island Rams Thursday evening in the opening game of the 2019 season, 1-0.
A tale of two halves saw the Wildcats coming out strong, leading in the first half of play in shots and in possession time in the opponent's goalmouth; Rhode Island answered back with several scoring chances of their own in the second half, but the UNH defense kept them off the board.
Just over a minute into overtime the stalemate was broken by a Rhode Island cross into the box bounced off a group of UNH defenders, finding a lone URI forward who managed to settle the deflection and end the game in the Rams' favor.
UNH will stay home for another contest this weekend, hosting the Sacred Heart Pioneers at Wildcat Stadium this Sunday, August 25, at 2 P.M.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• UNH opened up the offense with a shot from just outside the 18 foot mark by senior captain Caitlyn Keenan (Bow, N.H.) but it was saved by URI's Morrissey.
• Another shot in the 27th minute came from outside the box from freshman Whitney Wiley (Vienna, Va.) but it was handled by Morrissey in the middle of the goalmouth.
• With 10 minutes remaining, two New Hampshire chances were thwarted by offsides calls; UNH was whistled for three offsides in the first.
• A late first-half corner kick by Rhode Island presented a potential scoring opportunity for the Rams. As time expired the Wildcats cleared the ball out of the box and away from danger.
• The Wildcats started the second half with a strong opportunity into the box from Liz Lane (Porter, Maine) in the 51st minute; Lane fed a through-ball into the 18 to Kaylan Williams (Marion, Ind.) but she was swarmed by two Rams who prevented a shot from being taken.
• Another opportunity for Lane came in the 58th minute as she was fouled just outside the 18 yard box; her set piece shot went just high.
• In the 63rd minute, Ally Reynolds (Weymouth, Mass.) sent another through ball to Williams, who was onside, but the ball just missed her outstretched leg and rolled out for a goal kick.
• Sophomore goalkeeper Cat Sheppard (Nesconset, N.Y.) made a brilliant flying save in the 80th minute preventing a high Rhode Island shot from squeaking in just under the crossbar. Sheppard made all five of her saves in the second half.
• As regulation ended, Rhode Island got a free kick opportunity from about 40 yards out, but the ball was deflected out of bounds by UNH as the horn sounded for overtime.
• Rhode Island worked quickly into UNH's end of the field to begin overtime. In the 92nd minute, a Rhode Island pass high into the 18 was deflected out wide right by a group of UNH defenders, but a waiting Natalia O'Leary collected the loose ball and had the space to sneak it into the upper right-hand corner for the win.
