NCAA Ski Championships (Day 1) - Giant Slalom

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – The 2018 National Collegiate Skiing Championships, hosted by the University of Colorado, begin Wednesday with the men's and women's giant slalom races at Steamboat Springs Ski Resort.

NCAA Ski Championships Central
Lisa Wedsjö (Saltsjöbaden, Sweden) seeks her second career All-American performance. The senior raced to a sixth-place finish in GS at the 2015 NCAA Championships in Lake Placid, N.Y., to earn All-America Second Team recognition. In 2018, Wedsjö earned the No. 7 ranking in GS racing among Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) competitors. Her top finishes were third at Colby College on Jan. 21 and fourth at St. Michael's on Jan. 26.
Geneviève Frigon (Laval, Quebec) and Sohvi Virkkula (Salla, Finland) will also compete in the women's GS. Frigon earned All-American Second Team in slalom last year and was ranked 13th among Eastern competitors during this EISA Carnival season. Virkkula, a first-time NCAA championship skier, ranked 20th in the East and 12th in GS this season. The senior finished a season-best sixth in GS (Feb. 6) at Vermont, took eighth (Jan. 21) at Colby and ninth (Feb. 16) at Williams.
On the men's side, Patrick Kenney (Hingham, Mass.) represents the Wildcats. The freshman was ranked No. 6 in giant slalom and No. 7 among NCAA Eastern qualifiers. Top performances included a career-best second place at Vermont on Feb. 2, fifth at Williams on Feb. 16 and 11th at St. Michael's on Jan. 26.
WHAT'S NEXT
•The NCAA Ski Championships continue Thursday, March 8, with the first day of Nordic action at Howelsen Hill. The women's 5K classic (11 a.m., ET) and men's 10K classic (12:30 p.m., ET) will take center stage. UNH senior Peter Holmes (Tahoe City, Calif.), the East's No. 1 skier in classical racing, takes aim at his first career All-American performance. Holmes earned two wins in 10K classic races this season.
