Martinez Scores Career-high 16 Points in 75-65 Loss at Bryant

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Jayden Martinez (Cibolo, Texas) scored a career-high 16 points but the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team was defeated 75-65 by Bryant University in Saturday afternoon's non-conference game at Chace Athletic Center.
Martinez also recorded a team-high six rebounds and two blocks. Jordan Reed (Lucas, Texas) finished with 13 points, including three 3-pointers, five rebounds and two assists in playing all 40 minutes. Nick Guadarrama (Newington, Conn.) finished with 11 points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals and three blocks in 23 minutes.
Adam Grant and Byron Hawkins scored 20 points apiece to lead Bryant's offense. Grant also tallied three rebounds, three assists, four steals and a block. Hawkins' other numbers included four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Sabasitan Townes had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
UNH is now 2-6. Bryant, which outscored the Wildcats 19-6 in the last five minutes and 46-26 in the second half, improved to 2-5.
LOOKING AHEAD

FIRST HALF
* UNH took an early 8-6 lead when Reed hit a 3-pointer from the left corner and another 3-ball from the right corner at 16:02.
* Bryant scored the next five points to regain the lead, 11-8, at 13:04.
* The Wildcats went on a 10-1 run to take an 18-12 lead. Martinez scored the first six points of the spurt with a pull-up jumper in the lane, a basket on the right blocks and a putback. David Watkins (Dorchester, Mass.) made a baby hookshot in the lane and then hit both ends of the 1-and-1 from the foul line at 9:08.
* Bryant answered with 12 consecutive points to build a 24-18 lead at 5:42.
* Reed's 3-pointer from the right corner was followed by Martinez's 3-ball from the left corner to tie the score, 24-24, at 5:07. David Hall (Bucyrus, Ohio) followed with a dunk to put the 'Cats back on top, 26-24, at 4:35
* Hawkins' 3-pointer gave the Bulldogs a 27-26 lead at 4:17, but New Hampshire reeled off the next 11 points to take a 39-27 lead with one minute to play.
* Martinez ignited the rally with another 3-pointer from the left corner and then Mark Carbone (Wethersfield, Conn.) connected from beyond the arc to make it 32-27 at 3:15.
* Guadarrama finished an up-and-under move off the left glass, and then he drilled a 3-ball from the right corner to push the margin to 37-27 at 2:27. Chris Lester (Barrington, Ill.) made a layup to give the 'Cats a 12-point lead.
SECOND HALF
* Martinez opened the second-half scoring with a short jumper in the lane and Carbone followed with a pull-up jumpshot at the foul line to extend UNH's lead to 43-29.
* Bryant responded with an 11-0 run to trim the deficit to 43-40 at 16:14.
* UNH's 7-3 mini-run extended the cushion to 50-43
* Martinez drove the left wing for a layup to give the 'Cats a 54-50 lead heading into the media timeout at 7:13.
* The Bulldogs tied the score at 54 and 56 before Hall's 3-pointer from the left corner gave UNH a 59-56 lead at 5:06.
* Bryant scored the next seven points, however, to take a 63-59 lead that would not be relinquished. Hawkins' 3-ball at 4:01 gave the home team its first lead, 61-59, since 27-26 with 3:20 left in the first half.
* Leading 66-64 with two minutes remaining, Townes missed a 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down. Hawkins corralled the rebound and, once again with the shot clock about to expire, Grant buried a 3-pointer that gave the Bulldogs a 69-64 lead with 1:16 to play.
New Hampshire missed all three field goal attempts, including a pair of 3's, the rest of the way.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
* Bryant halted UNH's three-game win streak in the series and now leads the all-time series, 4-3.

* Martinez scored 12 of his team-high 16 points in the first half, when he was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor, including a pair of 3-pointers.
* New Hampshire used a different starting lineup for the sixth consecutive game.
* Carbone made his first career start. He finished with nine points, four rebounds and three assists in 35 minutes.
* With guards Josh Hopkins, Marque Maultsby and John Ogwuche already out because of injury, point guard Elijah Jordan (Orlando, Fla.) exited the game with an injury with 4:23 remaining in the first half and never returned.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
* UNH shot 41.4 percent from the floor in the game with a breakdown of 48.4 percent in the first half and 32.0 in the second.
* Bryant made 14 of 27 second half field goals (51.9%) after shooting 32.3 percent in the first half.
* The Wildcats made 50 percent of their 3-pointers (11-22) in comparison to Bryant's 32.3 percent (10-31).
* UNH held a 37-36 rebounding advantage. The Bulldogs had an 11-10 edge on the offensive glass that led to a 19-7 margin in second-chance points.
* New Hampshire committed a season-high 16 turnovers. Bryant turned the ball over 12 times.
* The home team finished with a 24-22 scoring edge in the paint.
