Camara Breaks Career Rebounding Record in 53-51 Win vs. Stony Brook

DURHAM, N.H. – Iba Camara (Dakar, Senegal) scored the last five points of the game and broke the program record for career rebounds to propel the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team to Sunday afternoon's 53-51 victory against Stony Brook University at Lundholm Gym.
In addition to scoring five points in the last 90 seconds, Camara also pulled down a rebound with 67 seconds on the clock and stole the ball with eight seconds left. Camara finished with a team-high 12 points and seven rebounds to increase his career total to 901. Dave Pemberton's benchmark of 897 had stood since 1972.
Tanner Leissner (Converse, Texas) recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Jacoby Armstrong (Dallas, Texas) matched his personal best of 11 rebounds and scored two points.
Stony Brook was led by Jaron Cornish (16p, 13r) and Jakub Petras (13p, 8r).
UNH, which has won four of its last five games, improved to 8-12 overall and 4-2 in America East. SBU is 8-12, 3-3.

DOWN THE STRETCH
- Cornish made 1 of 2 free throws to give the Seawolves a 51-48 lead at 2:36, but UNH kept the visitors scoreless the rest of the way. On its last five possessions, SBU went 0-for-2 from the floor and the foul line, and committed two turnovers.
- Camara's layup lifted New Hampshire within 51-50 at 1:28.
- Camara made two foul shots with 33 seconds remaining to give UNH a 52-51 lead.
- SBU called a timeout with 28 on the clock but threw the ball away on an attempted entry pass into the post.
- UNH immediately called time out with 18 seconds left, but lost the ball in the backcourt and Junior Saintel tied up the loose ball to give possession to Stony Brook with 12 to play.
- After another Seawolves' timeout, Akwasi Yeboah attempted to drive the left baseline but lost possession to Camara, who was fouled immediately with eight seconds remaining. Camara missed the front end of the double bonus, but made the second foul shot to extend the lead to 53-51.
- Cornish missed a contested driving layup down the lane with two seconds remaining and tracked down the loose ball, but time expired on the visitors.
GAME RECAP
- John Ogwuche (Makurdi, Nigeria) scored the game's first points on a 3-pointer at 18:45, but Stony Brook scored the next 11 points and took an eight-point lead at 13:01 on UC Iroegbu's layup.
- The Wildcats responded with an 11-0 run to surge ahead, 14-11, at 10:21. Camara and Elijah Jordan (Orlando, Fla.) converted back-to-back three-point plays to ignite the run, which also included a Jordan Reed (Lucas, Texas) 3-pointer and layup by Camara.
- Reed's second 3-pointer of the game gave UNH its largest lead of the first half – six points – of 19-13 with 8:17 on the clock.
- The 'Cats matched that margin when consecutive layups by Reed and Leissner pushed the score to 26-20 at 3:59.
- SBU closed the half with its second 11-0 run of the half to take a 31-26 lead into halftime.
- UNH regained the lead, 36-35, on Amstrong's jumper in the pain at 14:00.
- That was followed by back-to-baskets by Leissner – the second of which was a 3-pointer – to extend the advantage to 41-35 at 12:55.
- Both teams continued to struggle offensively, as neither team scored again until Luke Rosinski (Derry, N.H.) hit 1 of 2 foul shots at 9:59 to increase the lead to 42-35.
- The Seawolves rallied to tie the score within two minutes (42-42 at 8:08) on a 3-pointer by Yeboah and two short jumpers from Petras.
- The teams traded scores to move the score to 51-48 in SBU's favor at 2:36.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- This is the seventh consecutive game UNH held the opponent below its scoring average. Stony Brook entered Sunday's game averaging 72.6 points on a .431 field goal percentage but was limited to 51 points and 34.6%.
- New Hampshire recorded a 26-24 scoring edge in the paint and an 11-4 edge in second-chance points.
- Both teams struggled from the foul line. UNH made 11 of 17 free throw attempts (64.7%), but that was outstanding in comparison to SBU, which went 10-for-24 (41.7%).
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Camara became the UNH record holder for career rebounds with his fourth of the game – 898th career – which came at 18:56 of the second half on a missed Stony Brook free throw.
- Camara became the first Wildcat to reach the 900-rebound milestone with a defensive rebound at 5:33.
- Camara is now tied for 10th on UNH's leaderboard for career games played at 111 with Tommy McDonald (1990-94) and Marcus Bullock (2000-04).
- Despite scoring a season-low 11 points, Leissner moved up to No. 21 on the America East career scoring leaderboard with 1,766 points; he surpassed Mike Ferrara (Colgate, 1978-81; 1,763 pts).
