Ski Season Opens at St. Lawrence Carnival (Jan. 20-21)

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – The 2017 Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association season begins for the University of New Hampshire ski team with two days (Jan. 20-21) of competition at the Saint Lawrence Carnival. Alpine action takes place at Whiteface Mountain, while Nordic races are scheduled for Mount Van Hoevenberg.

Carnival Notes
•Ten of the 12 alpine competitors are veterans returning from last year's team for head coach Brian Blank (10th season). That includes four 2016 NCAA competitors: Bryan Cookson, Chris Steinke, Lisa Wedsjö and Geneviève Frigon, plus Phil Rivet, an All-East skier who was destined for NCAAs before suffering a season-ending leg injury.
•Three NCAA qualifiers (Peter Holmes, Lizzie Gill, Katrin Larusson) are among the nine returning skiers in the lineup for Nordic head coach Cory Schwartz (35th season) this weekend.
•Tõnis Luik, a member of the Estonian national team, just joined the alpine team as a UNH student-athlete at the semester break.
Next Up
The Wildcats will host the UNH Carnival on Jan. 27-28 with alpine races at Cannon Mountain and Nordic events at Jackson Ski Touring Center. Friday will feature the men's 10K and women's 5K classic races at Jackson XC and the women's and men's giant slalom at Cannon. On Saturday, it will be the men's 20K and women's 15K mass start freestyle races at Jackson and the slalom races at Cannon.
The University of New Hampshire will serve as the host school for the 2017 NCAA Skiing Championships (March 8-11) at Jackson Ski Touring Center (Nordic) and Cannon Mountain (Alpine). For more information on the UNH ski team, visit www.unhwildcats.com.
