DURHAM, N.H. – Seniors A.J. Albers (Eagan, Minn.), Fazal Nabi (Portland, Maine) and junior Chris Wingate (Hovik, Norway) each tallied goals as the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team defeated Stony Brook University, 3-2, Saturday at Bremner Field.
The Wildcats improved their record to 8-1-2 overall and 2-0-0 in the America East. The Seawolves fell to 4-5-2 and 1-1-0 in conference.
New Hampshire held a 14-11 shot advantage throughout the game. Freshman Chris Arling (Windham, N.H.) notched an assist on the first UNH goal. Senior Ryan Carpenter (Windham, N.H.) recorded four saves to improve his record to 7-1-2 overall.
Stony Brook scored the game's opening goal in the 12th minute. Vince Erdei dished a ball into the box to Alejandro Fritz who buried the attempt bottom right to go up 1-0.
The Wildcats responded quickly in the 15th minute when Arling delivered a low hard cross into the box that Albers blasted top left to equalize.
In the 24th minute Nabi used fancy footwork to dribble through the defense on the left side and finish bottom right to take a 2-1 Wildcat lead.
The scoring wasn't over as Wingate was fouled inside the box in the 43rd minute and was given a penalty kick attempt. He stepped up and nailed the shot down the middle to take a 3-1 lead into the break.
UNH held their defensive structure throughout the second half until the 73rd minute when Erdei finished through Wildcat traffic to reduce the deficit to 3-2.
In the final six minutes, UNH came up with back-to-back blocked shots to hold the lead and remain undefeated in conference play.
Stony Brook was led by Erdei who recorded an assist and a goal. Serge Gamwanya took four shots on the day, all on goal. Jason Orban made five saves in net, dropping his record to 4-5-2 overall.
The Wildcats will take on Binghamton University on Oct. 14 (7 p.m.) at Cowell Stadium.
