Taylor's Nordic Win Propels Skiing to Third Place at UVM Carnival (Day 1 of 2)

STOWE, Vt. – Annika Taylor (Truckee, Calif.) registered her second career Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association victory by winning the women's 5K freestyle Nordic race, and three other University of New Hampshire skiers notched Top-5 results to power the Wildcats to third place in Friday's opening day of action at the Vermont Carnival.
UNH has secured 426 points to trail host UVM (457 points) and Dartmouth College (440) halfway through the carnival. Middlebury (350) and Williams (253) round out the top five among the 16 schools competing.
Taylor, who finished in second place twice at last weekend's Bates Carnival, topped the podium in the 5K free at Trapp Family Lodge with a time of 14 minutes, 9.8 seconds for 50 points. It was her first EISA win since she took the top spot as a sophomore in the 15K free at the Colby Carnival on Jan. 26, 2013.
Katrin Larusson (Truckee, Calif.) placed eighth in a time of 14:48.1 for 33 points, and Tristan Ramey (Anchorage, Alaska) produced 29 points courtesy of her 11th-place finish (15:06.2). New Hampshire accumulated 112 points to finish runner-up to Vermont (128).
The Nordic duo of Raleigh Goessling (Esko, Minn.) and Eirik Fosnaes (Hovik, Norway) finished 5-6 in the men's 10K free to propel the Wildcats to third place with 103 points, behind Dartmouth (114) and UVM (111). Goessling made it a perfect 3-for-3 this season as the top UNH men's Nordic skier by crossing the line in 25:48.7 (39 points), while Fosnaes was right behind him at 25:49.8 (37). Tyler Quinn Smith (Park City, Utah) collected his first 27 career EISA points by finishing in 14th place (26:18.1).
At Mount Mansfield Ski Club, Lisa Wedsjö (Saltsjöbaden, Sweden) spearheaded the women's alpine team's second-place showing in the giant slalom. Wedsjö, who finished a mere 2.20 seconds out of first place, recorded a two-run combined time of 2 minutes, 13.61 seconds for third place and 44 points. Morgan Klein (Oregon, Wis.) placed seventh in 2:15.24 for 35 points, and Randa Teschner (Petawawa, Ontario) rounded out the Wildcats' scoring with 30 points as a result of her 11th-place time of 2:15.65. Dartmouth took the team victory with 134 points.
Coley Oliver (Salt Lake City, Utah) headlined a trio of Top-10 men's alpine 'Cats in the GS by finishing in fourth place (2:09.29/41 points); Jay Ogle (Pittsfield, Mass.) finished ninth (2:10.02/31 points), and Chris Steinke (Ottawa, Ontario) recorded a 10th-place time of 2:10.28 (30 points). With 102 points, UNH finished behind Vermont (128) and Middlebury (105).
The UVM Carnival concludes Saturday with the men's/women's slalom races at Mount Mansfield and the men's 15K/women's 10K classic mass start races at Trapp Family Lodge. For more information, visit www.unhwildcats.com.
