Taylor's Second-Place Finish Leads Skiing to Third Place at Bates Carnival (Day 1 of 2)

NEWRY & RUMFORD, Maine – Annika Taylor (Truckee, Calif.) finished in second place and newcomers Raleigh Goessling (Esko, Minn.) and Philippe Rivet (Saint-Lambert, Quebec) each added fifth-place finishes to propel the University of New Hampshire skiing team to third place among 16 schools competing on Friday's opening day of the Bates Carnival at Black Mountain and Sunday River.
UNH has totaled 362 points to slot behind the University of Vermont (447 points) and Dartmouth College (426). Middlebury College (357) and Colby College (229) round out the Top 5 through the first day of Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association carnival action. The Bates Carnival wraps up Saturday.
At Black Mountain, Taylor clocked in at 49 minutes, 38.2 seconds –just 4.5 seconds behind winner Heather Mooney of Middlebury— in the women's 15K classic mass start race to collect 47 of the Wildcats' 97 points (third place). Katrin Larusson (Truckee, Calif.), the 2014 EISA women's Nordic Rookie of the Year, finished in 51:10.2 for 12th place (28 points), and Tristan Ramey (Anchorage, Alaska) crossed the finish line in 20th place (52:11.9/22 points). UVM won the race with 114 points.
Goessling spearheaded the men's Nordic scores in the 20K classic MS with a time of 59:56.5 for fifth place and 39 points. Eirik Fosnaes (Hovik, Norway) finished in 1 hour, 1 minute, 57.1 seconds for 15th place (27 points), and Per Lindgren (Pitea, Sweden) tabulated 15 points courtesy of a 31st-place time of 1:02:57.2 UNH finished fourth (81) in the race captured by Dartmouth (125).
At Sunday River, Rivet led New Hampshire's alpine skiers in the men's giant slalom with a combined time of 2 minutes, 11.76 seconds for fifth place and 39 points. Jay Ogle (Pittsfield, Mass.) also raced his way into the Top-10 in a time of 2:12.36 for ninth place (33 points). Charlie Kidd (Toronto, Ontario) earned 23rd place in 2:13.88 (23 points). UNH amassed 95 points to finish fourth, while Middlebury (121) took the top spot.
The Wildcat women's alpine team also finished in fourth place (89 points) in GS. Lisa Wedsjö (Saltsjöbaden, Sweden) led the way by placing seventh in 2:15.67 for a team-high 35 points. Wedsjö was followed by Randa Teschner (Petawawa, Ontario), who crossed the line in 2:16.42 for 12th place (28 points), and Morgan Klein (Oregon, Wis.), who finished in 14th place (2:16.76/26 points). UVM won women's GS with 122 points.
The Bates Carnival concludes Saturday (Jan. 17) with men's and women's slalom on the alpine side, and women's 5K/men's 10K freestyle on the Nordic side. For more information, visit www.unhwildcats.com.
