DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire women's soccer team fell to Siena College Sunday afternoon from Bremner Field, 2-1, in non-conference action. Freshman forward Brooke Murphy (Monson, Mass.) netted the goal for the Wildcats, who has scored a goal in back-to-back games.
With the loss, UNH slips to 2-5-0 on the young season while the Saints improve to 3-4-1 on the year.
Senior midfielder Caroline Murray (New Canaan, Conn.) posted a team-high four shots in the game for the Wildcats. Murphy and sophomore Morgan Smith (Canton, Conn.) garnered three shots each.
The Wildcats out shot the Saints 17-7 for the match and turned up the pressure in the final stanza holding a 10-2 margin in targets. New Hampshire garnered six corner kicks (five in the second half) compared to Siena who earned three.
Sophomore netminder Mimi Borkan (Medfield, Mass.) made two saves in 90 minutes of action while Siena goalkeeper Taylor Booth made a total of eight saves in the game.
Siena's Anna Grant put the first goal on the board in the 17th minute of the match as Tara Sobierajski earned the assist.
The New Hampshire offense came alive in the second half. Six minutes in, Murray blasted a shot but it hit the top of the cross bar. Junior Gabrielle Sloan (Stow, Mass.) and senior Meghan Ledwith (Yardley, Pa.) added two more shots for the Wildcats in the 53rd and 54th minute as Booth came up with the saves.
Siena added it's second goal of the game with six minutes left to play as Kaela Mahoney found Cassy Landis just onside on the left side of the box and she fired a shot across from a tough angle just inside the far post to give the Saints the 2-0 edge.
The Saints were called for a hand ball in the box and Murphy followed through with the penalty kick goal to cut the lead 2-1 83:25 into the contest. Murphy has notched all of UNH's goals thus far this season and increases her goal total to four.
The Wildcats continue their home stand hosting Ivy League foe Harvard University on Thursday, Sept. 18 (7.p.m.) and it will be the first ever night game held at Cowell Stadium.
