DURHAM, N.H. –The University of New Hampshire women's soccer team defeated Binghamton University in penalty kicks (4-2) Thursday evening from Bremner Field to move onto the next round in the America East playoffs. The quarterfinal game officially ended in a 1-1 tie.
No. 3 New Hampshire (7-8-3, 4-2-2 AE) will face No. 2-seeded University Maryland, Baltimore County in Baltimore in the America East semifinal on Sunday, Nov. 2 (1 p.m.).
The last time UNH earned a win in a shootout dates back to 2006 (Oct. 27) as the Wildcats defeated the Bearcats with the same score (4-2) eight years later.
The Bearcats conclude their season at 7-9-2 overall and 3-3-3 in league play.
Sophomore goalkeeper Mimi Borkan (Medfield, Mass.) made five saves in 110 minutes. In penalty kicks, Borkan came up with two crucial stops.
Both netminders for Binghamton saw action in the game. Gaby Gold started the game for the Bearcats making seven saves in 74:16 of action giving up the one goal. Katie Hatziyianis played 35:44 in net while making four saves and she also played in the penalty kicks.

Senior co-captain Jenna Shaddock (Halifax, Nova Scotia) posted a team-high six shots and senior Caroline Murray (New Canaan, Conn.) was not far behind with five shots. Freshman Brooke Murphy (Monson, Mass.) had another great game producing one goal off of four shots.
The Wildcats took the first lead of the night in the 61st minute as Murphy blasted her ninth goal of the season from 18-yards out. She was able to push through the Bearcats defense at midfield and carry the ball into the Binghamton zone.
New Hampshire had several opportunities to capitalize on shots and corner kicks in the later portion of the second half but was unable to come through.
The Bearcats kicked their offense into high gear as they saw their hopes of tying the game up start to diminish. With1:04 remaining in regulation, Valarie McNamara headed the ball into the back of the net past Borkan off of a corner kick from Rebecca Raber to notch the game up at 1-1.
The first and second overtimes saw a combination of nine shots, with UNH taking five of those.
After two overtimes, Binghamton's Rebecca Raber started the shootout and gave the Bearcats a 1-0 edge. Ledwith followed with a goal of her own to notch it a one apiece. Borkan made two back-to-back incredible saves while Murphy and Shaddock tallied goals of their own to go up 3-1.
The Bearcats Stephanie Church gave her team the second goal of the shootout to cut the lead to 3-2. Moments later, O'Neil tallied the final goal of the penalty kicks (4-2) to push the Wildcats to a 1-1 tie against the Bearcats and advance to the next round of America East postseason play.
