EUGENE, Ore. – Sophomore goalkeeper Erica Correa (Cheshire, Conn.) registered a game-best five saves, but it wasn't enough, as the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team fell to the University of Oregon, 3-0, Friday evening in the second game of the Oregon Nike Tournament at Pape' Field.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 0-3 on the season, while the Ducks improve to 4-0, earning a school record fourth consecutive shutout. Oregon is off to its best start since 2003 when it won its first five decisions to open the season.
The Ducks tallied their first goal of the contest when Mo Fitzgerald shifted a ball to Julie Armstrong across the top of the box to put the home team up 1-0 at 40:32. Armstrong found the back of the net from 23 yards out, sending a ball into the upper right corner of the goal past Correa.
The home team would hold its early edge going into the half, but would add to its advantage following a UNH foul. Oregon was awarded its first penalty kick of the season on the play and Scout Libke scored, giving the Ducks a 2-0 lead with 30 minutes left to play.
About eight minutes later the Ducks were at it again when Riley Smith fired a ball at the net, but it was deflected by a UNH defender and Maddy Mercier tracked it down and knocked it into the goal to put the game out of reach, pushing ahead 3-0.
Oregon outshot UNH 16-4 in the match, including an 8-1 edge in the second frame. Alyssa Michel (Bellingham, Wash.) led the Wildcats with two shots, including one on goal.
The Wildcats return to action Sunday, Sept. 4 (1 p.m.) when they play their final game of the Oregon Nike Tournament against Oregon State.
