WAKEFIELD, Mass. - Senior forward Steve Saviano (Reading, Mass.) of the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team was named Co-Player of the Week by the Hockey East Association on Monday afternoon.
Saviano recorded four goals and one assist for five points in the 9-1 win over Merrimack on Friday night at Lawler Arena in North Andover, Mass. He finished the game with a plus/minus rating of +4 and he scored two even strength goals, one short handed goal and one power-play goal. Saviano and linemate Sean Collins both eclipsed the 100-point mark in their UNH careers in the Merrimack game to become the 59th and 60th players in the history of UNH hockey to accomplish that feat. Saviano's four-goal effort was the second of his Wildcat career. The first four-goal effort came earlier this season in an 8-2 win over Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y.
He has played in all 25 games this year for UNH and has tallied 20 goals and 14 assists for 34 points. He has registered at least one point in 17 of UNH's 25 games this year and has posted five multiple-goal games this season.
Saviano ranks sixth in the nation with 34 points and his 20 goals is tied for second among Div. I players. He also ranks eighth in the nation at 1.36 points per game and his 0.80 goals per game is third best nationally.
He has posted at least one point in his last five games with eight goals and three assists for 11 points in that time, including seven goals and two assists for nine points in the last three contests.
The Wildcats (15-7-3, 7-3-3 HE) return to action Friday, Jan. 30 vs. the University of Maine (17-6-1, 9-4-1 HE) at Alfond Arena. The game begins at 8 p.m. and will be carried live by College Sports Television.
