"I'm grateful for the moments we've had with these guys and everything they've put into it," fourth-year UNH head coach Rick Santos said. "Sixteen out of 20 years in the playoffs and this is a dream come true. I'm excited that these guys will experience it, particularly at home at Wildcat Stadium. Meaningful football late in the year is what this program is built on."
The Wildcats (8-4, 6-2 CAA) received an at-large selection after defeating the University of Maine, 27-9, on Nov. 23 to extend their winning streak to four games and retain the Brice-Cowell Musket in the Buffalo Wild Wings Border Battle at Alfond Stadium.
"For this to come to fruition based on how they worked and how they stuck together – being 4-4 at one point and then going undefeated in November shows the resolve and mental toughness of this group," Santos said.
UT Martin received an at-large berth as Big South-OVC quad-champion after posting an 8-4 overall record with a 6-2 conference mark.
The winner of the first round matchup between UNH and UT Martin advances to face top-seeded Montana State University (12-0, 8-0 Big Sky) on Saturday, Dec. 7 (3 p.m. Eastern).
New Hampshire will be making its 18th appearance in the FCS playoffs. In their most recent appearance in 2022, the Wildcats were 52-42 home victors against Fordham University in the first round and then lost at Holy Cross in the second round.
UNH had a stretch of 14 consecutive tournament appearances spanning 2004-17 and compiled a record of 14-14 during that run. The Wildcats have a 15-17 overall record in the NCAA FCS (formerly I-AA) tourney.
