'Cats Down Retrievers at Home

DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire women's basketball team took an America East win in a high-leading game against the UMBC Retrievers on Saturday, Jan. 20. This game was a "Real 'Cats Wear Pink" game which aims to raise awareness for breast cancer.
Freshman guard Maggie Cavanaugh (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) led the Wildcats in scoring and tied her career-high with 13 points.

FIRST QUARTER:
- The Wildcats started off hot, going on an 10-2 run in the first half of the quarter.
- Freshman guard Maggie Cavanaugh (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) stole the ball, allowing Belen Morales Lopez to continue the lead with a layup.
- The 'Cats defense thrived in the quarter with seven defensive rebounds, two blocks, and four steals.
- Sophomore guard Breezie Williams (Canton, OH) led the team with four of the seven defensive rebounds in the quarter.
- The Retrievers came into the quarter fighting and took the lead for the first time in the game with a 10-1 run in four minutes.
- Senior guard Belen Morales Lopez (Alicante, Spain) took back the lead for the 'Cats with a layup 3:34 left in the half.
- The Retrievers had a two-point lead going into the half with Trinity Palacio scoring a three-pointers with 17 seconds left.
- Jaliena Sanchez of UMBC scored the opening points of the quarter with a jumper strengthening their lead by four.
- The Wildcats responded with an 11-3 run in three minutes, ending with two three-pointers by Cavanaugh, giving UNH a four-point lead.
- Adara Groman (Scituate, Mass.) retrieved the offensive rebound and scored a two-pointer in a buzzer-beater basket to end the quarter, keeping UNH in the lead by six.
- Gomez scores first in the final quarter with a layup, keeping the 'Cats in the lead.
- UMBC responded quickly with a layup, keeping the 'Cats lead at six.
- In 1 minute and 18 seconds, UNH had a 9-0 run, giving the 'Cats a 17- point lead. This run consisted of all free-throws due to UMBC fouls.
- UNH outscored UMBC on turnovers 21-16.
- The Wildcats lead in points scored in the paint 22-1 over the Retrievers.
