Three Student-Athletes & One Team IMPACT Player Join Wildcat Family
DURHAM, N.H. – University of New Hampshire women's basketball Head Coach Kelsey Hogan announced the addition of three student-athletes –and a special Team IMPACT player- to the 2023-24 roster. Maggie Cavanaugh (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.), Sharmela Reid (Montreal, Quebec), Clara Gomez (Sabadell, Spain) and Brooklynn Gray (Laconia, N.H.) join the Wildcat basketball family.
Cavanaugh is a 5-foot-9 point guard out of St. Rose High School in Belmar, N.J. who also saw action for the New Jersey ShoreShots, a well-known AAU program that has won multiple championships. Cavanaugh has the remarkable ability to navigate the court and a knack for creating scoring opportunities for others. She is set to bring a fresh dimension to UNH's offense.
What Coach Hogan Says
"Maggie is a true floor general that pushes the tempo and loves to compete. She is a three-level scorer and will give us a strong presence with her leadership and her basketball knowledge this year."
Reid is a 6-foot-1 forward with game-changing, shot-blocking ability who comes to the Wildcats by way of Montreal, Quebec. A rising star with an impressive track record, Reid garnered attention by being selected to play in the prestigious 2023 Canletes All Canadian Games (CACG) in Oshawa, Ontario. Reid was tabbed a 2023 Game Point All-Star as one of the top players in Quebec, she was named a 2023 National Champion Quarterfinals Player of the Game and made back-to-back Provincial (State) Championships and back-to-back National Championship appearances, winning bronze in 2023.
What Coach Hogan Says
"Sharmela is a force to be reckoned with who will give us a great inside presence on both ends of the floor. She has the ability to push the tempo with her speed and willingness to run the floor. Her length and athleticism will be prevalent on the defensive end as well, especially her ability to rebound out of her area."
Gomez, who joins the Wildcats following two seasons at Colorado State University, is an international sensation who has captured the attention of basketball enthusiasts worldwide. Known for her exceptional scoring ability and versatility, the 6-foot-1 guard spent time playing for Barcelona's Segle XXI, considered the top Spanish Club Team. Gomez, a 2022 Mountain West Academic All-Conference Team member, is expected to bolster the team's lineup, adding a new level of resilience to their play.
What Coach Hogan Says
"Clara causes all sorts of mismatches for us. She is a dynamic player; her game will bring versatility on both ends of the floor. She will have a great scoring presence for us with the ability to play inside and out. Coming from Colorado State, and playing in the top Spanish league, she brings great experience to our young squad and will make an immediate impact for us."
The Wildcats are also excited to announce the signing of Brooklynn Gray (Laconia, N.H.), age 10, from Team IMPACT, a national nonprofit that connects children facing serious and chronic illnesses with local college athletic teams, forming life-long bonds and life-changing outcomes. Through Team IMPACT, children like Brooklynn are drafted onto local college athletic teams and become an official member of the team to support the child's physical, social and emotional needs. By being a part of the UNH women's basketball program, Brooklynn, a fifth grader at Elm Street School in Laconia, N.H., will attend Wildcat practices, games, events and more.
Brooklynn's remarkable tenacity and uncanny competitive spirit adds another element to the roster. Her dedication to teamwork and commitment aligns perfectly with the values of the program.
What Coach Hogan Says
"Brooklynn is an amazing girl who shows so much courage and resilience. We are so honored to have her be a part of our program and our Wildcat Family. We are excited to see her wear uniform No. 1 this year."
