Cookman Scores First Career Goal in 5-1 Loss at Maine

ORONO, Maine – Senior goalkeeper Jemma Woods (Frimley, England) recorded 10 saves but the University of New Hampshire field hockey team was defeated 5-1 by the University of Maine at Maine Field Hockey Complex on Friday afternoon.
In addition to Woods' 10 saves, senior back Molly McAteer (Annapolis, Md.) was credited with two defensive saves. UNH's goal was scored by freshman Tamera Cookman (Woking, England).
Poppy Lambert and Sydney Meader both scored two goals for Maine, and Lambert also tallied both an assist and defensive save. Mia Borley was credited with five saves.
UNH is now 3-5 overall and 0-1 in America East and Maine is 5-3, 1-0.

FIRST QUARTER
- Maine recorded a 6-3 shot advantage and scored the only goal in the opening 15 minutes.
- The Black Bears scored on the first shot of the game when Lambert converted a penalty stroke into a 1-0 lead at 2:43.
- UNH generated a penalty corner in the eighth minute, but Lambert preserved the one-goal advantage by stopping Cookman's shot from going into the cage.
SECOND QUARTER
- Maine had a 5-1 shot advantage to outscore the 'Cats 1-0 in the second quarter.
- The Black Bears earned their first corner of the period at 25:02, but McAteer kept the 'Cats within one goal by denying Lambert.
- The home team continued to pressure and converted a corner into a 2-0 lead on Meader's goal at 26:39.
THIRD QUARTER
- Both teams struck in the third quarter with Maine holding a 5-4 shot advantage.
- Woods turned aside Lambert in the 37th minute and Meader in the 39th, then McAteer recorded her second defensive save of the day to once again deny Lambert in the 42nd minute.
- Julia Ross scored an unassisted goal at 42:02 to extend the lead to 3-0.
- UNH began to sustain pressure in the 43rd minute. McAteer's direct shot on a corner was stopped by Borley and Lindsay Lee (Eindhoven, Netherlands) sent the shot off the rebound wide of the cage.
- Moments later, Cookman scored her first career goal and points with an unassisted strike at 43:31 to lift the Wildcats within 3-1.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Maine scored twice more with an 8-4 shot advantage in the final frame to pull away.
- UNH generated the first pressure of the closing quarter, but Cookman's shot was stopped by Borley in the 48th minute.
- Woods then turned away Meader on her initial shot and the rebound to keep the 'Cats within 3-1 at 51:32.
- Maine converted another corner into Lambert's second goal of the game and a 4-1 lead at 54:18.
- Meader closed the scoring with 2:15 remaining.

- Maine finished with the edge in shots (24-12), shots on goal (17-7) and corners (9-3).
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Woods finished with 10+ saves for the third consecutive game and fourth time this season.
