Lee Lifts UNH to 3-2 win vs. UC Davis in Shootout

DURHAM, N.H. – Freshman forward Tasmin Cookman (Woking, England) and junior back Lindsay Lee (Eindhoven, Netherlands) both scored a goal in regulation as the University of New Hampshire field hockey team picked up a 3-2 win in a shootout over the UC Davis Aggies on Friday afternoon at Memorial Field.
Cookman's goal gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the first quarter and Lee's third-quarter tally tied the game at 2-2. Senior goalkeeper Jemma Woods (Frimley, England) made eight saves, including two in the second overtime, and freshman forward Nicole Poulakis (Ajax, Ontario) extended her point streak to eight games with an assist on Cookman's goal.
After no goals were scored in the two 10-minute overtime periods, the game went to a shootout, where Lee scored in the sudden-death sixth round and then Woods denied the Aggies' Audrey Lee to secure the 3-2 victory.
Lizzy Tedrow and Brooke Sanchez both scored a goal for UC Davis and goalie Kalli Wagnon made seven saves.
UNH moves to 9-8 overall, 7-3 at home and 3-4 in America East while UC Davis is now 2-12, 1-6.

FIRST QUARTER
- New Hampshire held a 4-2 lead in shots on goal at the end of the first quarter.
- UNH struck first to take a 1-0 lead at 1:03 when Poulakis centering pass from the right post was finished off by Cookman at the goalmouth for her 16th goal of the season.
- Woods made a great save at 7:26 on Karly Redman, who was in all alone, to keep the game 1-0 Wildcats.
- Tamera Cookman (Woking, England) was denied by Wagnon at 11:24 on a great chance off of a UNH corner.
SECOND QUARTER
- UC Davis evened the score at 1-1 at 17:51 on Sanchez's seventh goal of the season. Karly Redmon picked up the assist on the cross-crease pass to the left post.
- The Aggies took a 2-1 lead at 20:19 on Tedrow's third goal of the season. She finished off the pass from Lee into the empty left side of the cage.
- Woods made an important stop on Milou Korthouwer at 28:38 off of a UC Davis corner.
- UC Davis held a 4-0 advantage in shots on goal during the second quarter.
THIRD QUARTER
- A defensive third quarter led to both teams recording two shots on goal.
- Poulakis carved through the defense at 31:48 and got a scoring chance but hit the right post.
- Woods made a save on Caroline Stutte at 41:55 off another UC Davis corner.
- UNH tied the game at 2-2 on Lee's second goal of the season at 43:19. A Wildcat corner led to a great pass from Tamera Cookman at the top of the circle to Lee, who put it in from the left post.
FOURTH QUARTER
- The defensive battle returned in the final 15 minutes with UNH holding a 2-0 shot advantage in the quarter.
- Lee was denied on a shot from the left post by Wagnon at 52:23
- Tamera Cookman had an opportunity to break the tie at 59:31 on a UNH corner and a Tasmin Cookman stick-stop, but her shot from the top of the circle was blocked in front.
OVERTIME
- Poulakis had a breakaway a little past midway through the first OT, but Wagnon came well out of her net to break it up with a sliding tackle.
SECOND OVERTIME
- Tasmin Cookman stormed down the left sideline and drove to the cage to get a shot off but was denied by Wagnon at 72:33
- Woods made an acrobatic blocker save on a high shot by Lee from the middle of the circle at 78:50.
- The shots on goal were 2-1 in favor of UC Davis during the second extra session.
SHOOTOUT
- The Wildcats held a 2-0 advantage after two rounds of the shootout, with goals from Tasmin Cookman and Lindsay Lee and one stop by Woods.
- UC Davis stormed back to tie the shootout at two apiece after four rounds with goals from Shannon Lackey and Audrey Lee.
- The shootout was tied at two apiece after five rounds to advance the game to sudden death for round six.
- Lee scored in the top of the sixth round with a turnaround shot placed inside the right post, Woods made a great stop on Audrey Lee to end the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Aggies led in shots on goal (10-9) but the Wildcats maintained the advantage in corners (9-4), as well as shots (20-15).
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Tasmin Cookman increased her team-leading totals to 16 goals and 42 points.
- She extends her goal and point streaks to four games with five goals and two assists for a total of 12 points in that span.
- Poulakis has 12 goals and 31 points to rank second on the squad in both stats.
- Poulakis has nine goals and five assists for 23 points during her eight-game point streak.
- Lee scored her second goal of the season to bring her point total to six on the year (2 goals, 2 assists).
