Freshman Phenoms Tasmin Cookmand and Nicole Poulakis Score Again
DURHAM, N.H. – Freshman phenoms Tasmin Cookman (Woking, England) and Nicole Poulakis (Ajax, Ontario) both scored a goal, but the University of New Hampshire field hockey team was defeated 4-2 by 22nd-ranked University at Albany on Friday afternoon at Memorial Field.
Cookman's goal tied the score, 1-1 in the first quarter and Poulakis' third-quarter tally gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead. Senior goalkeeper Jemma Woods (Frimley, England) made five saves – all in the third quarter – and senior captain Molly McAteer (Annapolis, Md.) was credited with a defensive save.
Julie Rodijk scored two goals in the last three minutes to lift UAlbany to victory. Goalie Hannah Mangan made one save.
UNH moves to 7-8 overall and 2-4 in America East while UAlbany is now 12-4, 5-2.

FIRST QUARTER
- Both teams recorded one goal on one shot in the opening 15 minutes.
- UAlbany struck first at 3:07 when Bianca Orsola's centering pass from the left post was redirected into an open cage by Luisa Knapp at the goalmouth.
- UNH leveled the score, 1-1, exactly three minutes later. Senior captain Ava Mariani (Easton, Pa.) slipped a pass to the middle of the circle, where Cookman's tapped a rolling shot off a reverse stick into the cage.
SECOND QUARTER
- The defensive battle continued in the second quarter. The Great Danes recorded a 2-0 shot advantage and 1-0 edge in penalty corners.
THIRD QUARTER
- UAlbany controlled play out of halftime with a 9-1 shot advantage and 4-0 edge in corners, but both teams added one goal to the total to advance the score to 2-2 through 45 minutes.
- Poulakis then scored in a 1-v-3 breakaway to give UNH a 2-1 lead at 32:02.. From the middle of the circle, she pulled the ball back and to the right to avoid Mangan. After the goalie slid to the turf, Poulakis settled the ball and lifted a shot over Mandan and past a UAlbany defender into the left side of the cage.
- The Great Danes capitalized on a corner to tie the score, 2-2, at 37:17. Woods stopped the initial shot from the left side by Alison Smimsdom and the second chance off Rodijk's stick, but Smimsdom corralled the rebound and scored.
FOURTH QUARTER
- The defensive battle returned in the final 15 minutes with UAlbany recording a 2-1 shot advantage.
- Rodijk corralled a loose ball in the middle of the circle and fired a shot into the open cage to put the Great Danes back in front, 3-2, at 56;05.
- UAlbany converted another corner into a goal and 4-2 advantage at 57:36 when Smimsdon's reverse-stick pass from the top of the circle went to the left side, where Rodijk fired a rising shot into the cage.
- UNH pressured in the final minute, but Mariani's shot from the right wing was kicked aside by Mangan at 59:18.

- UAlbany finished with the edge in shots (14-3), shots on goal (10-3) and corners (7-1).
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Cookman increased her team-leading totals to 14 goals and 38 points.
- Poulakis has 11 goals and 28 points to rank second on the squad in both stats.
- Poulakis extended her point streak to six games; she has eight goals and four assists for 20 points in that span.
- McAteer has four defensive saves this season, which is also the team total in that stat.
