Wildcats fall at Vermont in AE Hoops opener, 82-68

Nick Guadarrama and Josh Hopkins each tallied 18 points apiece in the losing effort for UNH
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Senior Nick Guadarrama (Newington, Conn.) scored a team-leading 18 points to pace three UNH men's basketball players in double digits, but Ben Shungu's 29-point outburst led the University of Vermont to Thursday night's 82-68 America East victory at Patrick Gym on ESPNU.
Sophomore Blondeau Tchoukuiegno (Montreal, Quebec) scored all 16 of his points in the first half, including a career-high four 3-point field goals, and graduate student Josh Hopkins (Greensboro, N.C.) tallied 14 of his 16 after halftime for UNH (5-5, 0-1 America East), which was playing its first game in 24 days.
Vermont (9-4, 1-0 AE) broke the game open with a 20-6 run after a Guadarrama conventional three-point play trimmed the UVM lead to 62-59 with 8:38 left.
Shungu hit 11 of 16 shots (68.8 percent), which included 4-of-6 from 3-point range, and Ryan Davis scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half to go along with seven rebounds.
NOTEBOOK
•Vermont outscored New Hampshire 40-20 in points in the paint.
•The Wildcat bench held a 21-17 edge over the Catamount reserves, led by Hopkins' 6-for-8 shooting and 4-of-5 from 3-point land.
•The first half featured three ties and four lead changes before Vermont went to the intermission with a 36-35 lead.
•UNH's largest lead was 26-23 with 7:26 left in the first half.
