UNH Edged 3-2 by Cal in Conference Opener

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands) and sophomore Lindsay Lee (Eindhoven, Netherlands) both scored a goal, but the University of New Hampshire field hockey team was defeated 3-2 by Cal on Friday afternoon at Memorial Field.
Junior goalkeeper Jemma Woods (Frimley, England) was credited with three saves, including two in the fourth quarter that kept the Wildcats within one goal.
Cal counterpart Cato Knipping made six saves. Rachel Buttinger (two goals) and Sara Stone (goal, assist) led the Golden Bears' offense.
UNH is now 2-6 overall and 0-1 in America East while Cal improved to 5-3, 1-0.

- The Wildcats will return to action Sept. 26 to play UC Davis. Game time is at 12 p.m. at Memorial Field.
First Quarter
- UNH recorded a 5-4 shot advantage and 1-0 edge in penalty corners as both teams scored one goal in the opening 15 minutes.
- Stone scored the first goal off a deflection at 7:41. Kiki De Bruijne was credited with the assist.
- Lee was tripped while rushing toward goal and the 'Cats were awarded a penalty stroke. She converted the stroke to score the first goal of her career and level the score, 1-1, at 10:10.
Second Quarter
- The shots were even, 2-2, and New Hampshire recorded the only two corners of the second quarter, but Cal scored the lone goal to regain the lead heading into halftime.
- UNH generated the first shot of the quarter comes at 17:30, but van den Brekel was denied by Knipping.
- Cal was held without a shot the opening nine minutes of the second quarter before Buttinger sent a shot wide of the cage.
- Stone's shot was tipped in by Buttinger as Cal took a 2-1 lead with 3:34 left in the first half.
- Both teams generated pressure inside the last minute but were unable to score.
Third Quarter
- Buttinger scored again on another deflection, this time off Maddie Cleat's initial shot, to extend Cal's advantage to 3-1 at 34:21.
- van den Brekel lifted UNH within 3-2 at 37:44 when her shot deflected off a Cal defender into the corner of the cage.
- Junior Leah Glidden (Kittery, Maine) was turned away by Knipping on both the initial shot and the rebound attempt in the 41st minute.
- Cal recorded two shots in the last two minutes of the quarter with Woods stopping the shot off Claire Hind's stick in the 44th minute.
Fourth Quarter
- Cal recorded a 2-1 shot advantage in the final 15 minutes of regulation.
- Buttinger put another shot on goal in the 51st minute, but this time Woods made the save.
- The 'Cats were very assertive in the last two minutes and kept the ball on their attacking side of the field. They generated one shot, but junior Ava Mariani (Easton, Pa.) was denied by Knipping with 22 seconds on the clock.
Inside The Numbers:
- The total shots were even at 12 with UNH tallying an 8-6 edge in shots on goal.
- The Wildcats recorded the only three corners of the game – all in the first half.
