Martinez's Double-Double Leads UNH Past St. Joseph's of Maine, 98-53

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior Jayden Martinez (Cibolo, Texas) recorded a double-double with game highs of 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team to a 98-53 victory in Tuesday night's season opener at Lundholm Gym against Saint Joseph's College of Maine.
Martinez led seven Wildcats who scored in double figures. Classmate Nick Guadarrama (Newington, Conn.) was next with 13 points, and he also led the 'Cats in both assists (four) and steals (three).
Saint Joseph's was led by Griffin Foley's 10 points.

FIRST HALF
- New Hampshire led the entire game after Martinez's short jumper in the paint gave the 'Cats a 2-0 lead on the game's first possession.
- Martinez scored again on a pair of foul shots to give the Wildcats a 4-0 lead at 18:56 and Guadarrama's basket at 18:21 reestablished a four-point lead, 6-2.
- Sophomore Nick Johnson (Bronx, N.Y.) converted a three-point play off a pass from Martinez to give UNH a 9-5 lead at 17:49.
- That play was the start of a 9-0 run that ended with Guadarrama's dunk that pushed the advantage to 15-5 at 15:42.
- Junior Sloan Seymour (Albany, N.Y.) netted UNH's five points on a jumper and 3-pointer to push the advantage to 20-9.
- Back-to-back layups by senior Josh Hopkins (Greensboro, N.C.) and Martinez reestablished a double-digit lead, 24-13, at 10:46.
- Johnson made two foul shots at 9:32 to give UNH its largest lead to that point, 28-16, and spark an 8-2 run that advanced the score to 34-18 at 7:17.
- Saint Joseph's Nicholas Curtis answered with a step-back jumper but UNH answered with six consecutive points, including a pair of Martinez baskets, to build a 40-20 lead at 4:54.
- Following a 3-ball by Curtis, the Wildcats went on a 9-0 run – highlighted by Hopkins' dunk – to extend the margin to 26 points, 49-23, at 2:27.
- Senior Qon Murphy (Charlotte, N.C.) scored on a driving layup with three seconds remaining, but the Monks ended the half on a buzzer beater by Drew Shea to send UNH into halftime with a 51-29 lead.
SECOND HALF
- Sophomore Blondeau Tchoukuiegno (Montreal, Quebec) opened the second-half scoring with a pair of free throws to ignite an 8-0 spurt that was capped by a Guadarrama steal and Martinez dunk and pushed the margin to 59-29.
- Another dunk by Martinez, this time set up by Tchoukuiegno's steal, made it 63-32 at 16:58.
- Leading 70-41 at 13:09, the Wildcats scored nine consecutive points to build a 79-41 lead at 8:40. Tchoukueigno's layup off a feed from Guadarrama started the spurt at 12:23, and a pair of Hopkins' jumpers sandwiched a Murphy's layup.
- The lead grew to 40 points, 89-49, on a driving layup by sophomore Marco Foster (Lancaster, Texas) at 4:31.
- Grad student Chris Lester (Barrington, Ill.) recorded a steal on back-to-back possessions and also finished with a layup and dunk to advance the score to 95-51 at 2:10.
- Tchoukueigno's 3-pointer with 59 seconds remaining in the game closed the scoring.
GAME NOTES
- New Hampshire made 40 of 76 field goal attempts (52.6%) and that included 3-for-16 (18.8%) from 3-point range.
- The Monks shot 38.6% (22-57) from the floor with a 28.0% mark (7-25) on 3-pointers.
- UNH outscored the guests 15-2 at the foul line.
- The Wildcats recorded the scoring edge on turnovers (36-2), in the paint (70-24), second-chance points (21-7) and fast break points (24-0).
- The 'Cats outrebounded the Monks, 45-31.
- UNH recorded 16 steals and committed just five turnovers.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Martinez recorded his 15th career double-double and sixth game with 20+ points. He also had three assists, two steals and a blocked shot.
- Martinez has 20 consecutive starts, which is the longest active UNH streak.
- Guadarrama played a team-high 26 minutes, 49 seconds.
- Tchoukuiegno netted 12 points.
- Four 'Cats finished with 10 points: Hopkins, Johnson, Seymour and Murphy.
- It was the UNH debut for transfers Seymour and Foster.
- New Hampshire has won seven consecutive season openers.
