Jayden Martinez notched a team-high 21 points in the losing effort for the Wildcats
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Senior forward Jayden Martinez (Cibolo, Texas) of the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team scored a team-high 21 points to go along with eight rebounds in the 75-70 loss against Big East foe Marquette on Friday night at Fiserv Forum.
The Wildcats drop to 1-1 overall, while the Golden Eagles improve to 2-0 overall on the season.
"Anytime you go on the road and play a team at this level in the Big East, you are concerned, are you going to play hard enough," said UNH head coach Bill Herrion. "I know Shaka's teams play hard, I am really proud of our guys about how hard we played, the guys competed and played well. Jayden Martinez and Nick Guadarrama were terrific and then you are kind of in a possession game down the stretch and you have to make some plays. They made a few more plays than us and got to the line more than we did."
Martinez shot 7-for-15 from the field and 4-for-8 from three.
Senior forward Nick Guadarrama (Newington, Conn.) hit a three pointer with 27.2 to cut the Golden Eagles' lead to one point at 71-70, but it wasn't enough. He finished the game with 15 points, going 4-for-7 from 3-point land with eight boards.
The Wildcats went on a 7-0 run midway through the second and tied the game at 58-58 with 7:45 to go on a drive to the basket by sophomore guard Nick Johnson (Bronx, N.Y.).
Senior guard Qon Murphy (Charlotte, N.C.) chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds in the losing effort for the Wildcats.
UNH led the majority of the first half of play, but went to the locker room down five points at the half, 34-29. The Golden Eagles went on a 13-3 run to end the first stanza in the final 2:50. The 'Cats outrebound Marquette, 25-19 in the first half.
As a team, the Wildcats shot 44% from three for the game, which included 54% in the second half.
The 'Cats are now 0-2 against Marquette all-time.
Darryl Morsell scored a game-high 26 points in the win for the Golden Eagles, while Justin Lewis chipped in with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
UNH returns to action on Thursday, November 18 at Providence College. Game time from the Dunkin' Donuts Center is 6:30 p.m. on FS2.
