ORONO, Maine – Marque Maultsby (Raleigh, N.C.) scored a game-high 17 points, but the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team was edged 59-56 by the University of Maine in Saturday afternoon's America East matchup at Memorial Gym.

Maultsby hit 6 of 10 field goal attempts, including 2-for-4 from 3-point range, and was a perfect 3 of 3 at the foul line. He also had two assists and two steals.

UNH, which missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer at the final buzzer, is now 3-3 overall and 2-1 in America East, as well as 0-2 on the road. Maine is 1-3, 1-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half

UNH scored the first points of the game on a Chris Lester (Barrington, Ill.) 3-pointer, but Maine went on a 9-0 run to build a 9-3 advantage, and the Black Bears held a 12-5 lead at the first media timeout.
With the Wildcats trailing 16-10, Maultsby completed a three-point play at 12:14 and assisted on a Tayler Mattos (New London, N.H.) layup to lift UNH within 16-15 at 11:06.
Maultsby drilled a 3-pointer to give New Hampshire its first lead of the game, 18-16, at 8:44.
Maine called time out and hit a jumper to end UNH's 8-0 run and tie the score.
The 'Cats inched out to a 30-24 lead on a pair of Maultsby foul shots with 47 seconds on the clock.
The Black Bears responded with two free throws to close within 30-26 at the half.

Second Half

UNH extended the advantage to nine points, 38-29, on a layup by Jayden Martinez (Cibolo, Texas) at 17:41.
Trailing 43-36, Maine scored eight consecutive points to regain the lead, 44-43, at 12:12.
The teams exchanged baskets to advance the score to 46-45 in favor of the home team at 11:13, and that proved to be the last lead change of the game.
UNH once again pulled within one point, 52-51, on a Blondeau Tchoukuiengo (Montreal, Quebec) free throw at 5:10.
Maine's Vilgot Larsson immediately answered with a 3-pointer, however, and his layup gave the Black Bears a 57-51 lead at 2:53.
Neither team scored again until UNH's K.J. McClurg (Morgantown, W.Va.) was fouled on a 3-point attempt and made all three free throws to trim the margin to 57-54 with 28 seconds remaining.
Following a steal by Martinez, McClurg was fouled and hit two more free throws to lift UNH within one points, 57-56, with 18 seconds to play.
Maine's Mykhailo Yagodin made two foul shots to reestablish a 3-point cushion 59-56, with 13 seconds on the clock.
The Wildcats advanced the ball and Maultsby's game-tying attempt from behind the 3-point line did not drop at the buzzer.
Maine shot 50 percent (12-24) from the floor, including 50 percent (4-8) on 3-pointers, in the second half to record the comeback.

UNH NOTEBOOK

Tchoukuiengo recorded a career-high six assists and matched his personal best of six rebounds.
Mattos, in his first start and third game as a Wildcat, was UNH's second-leading scorer with eight points.
Martinez had a team-high seven rebounds and also scored seven points.
McClurg is a perfect 13-for-13 at the foul line this season.
UNH shot 39.2 percent (20-51) from the floor and 21.1 percent (4-19) on 3's.
The rebound total was even at 30. UNH entered the game with a conference-best +8.8 rebounding margin.
