Storey, Wildcats Edged by Stony Brook 52-50

Wildcats have three-game road streak snapped.
STONY BROOK, N.Y. – University of New Hampshire senior Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine) led the way with 14 points but the Wildcats' women's basketball team fell to the unbeaten Stony Brook Seawolves by a score of 52-50 on Long Island.
The Wildcats held the lead with under six minutes to go in the final period but the Seawolves were able to edge out UNH in the final minutes, going up by four points with just four seconds to go.
NEXT UP: The Wildcats return home for their Education Day game this coming Wednesday, February 12 at 11 A.M. where area elementary schools will send their classes to Durham for a pregame presentation and will attend the game shortly following. HIGHLIGHTS:
- Storey's 14 points came off 6-of-15 shooting and a perfect 2-for-2 at the free throw line. Storey also added in an assist, three steals, and two blocks, one in clutch fashion to prevent Stony Brook from extending its late lead.
- The Wildcats were also led by junior Amanda Torres (Hudson, N.H.) who finished with 11 points, a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line, and had a team-high five assists.
- Another double-digit performance came from Caroline Soucy (Beverly, Mass.) who tallid 10 points, six boards, and dished an assist in the contest.
- Maggie Ahearn (Marshfield, Mass.) pulled in a team-high eight rebounds, along with four points and three steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The teams began the game trading buckets for the first six minutes of play, but Stony Brook would pull ahead by eight points with two minutes to play in the first, 14-6, on a three-pointer by Hilaire.
- The Wildcats rallied back in the second, getting the deficit down to three points at the 2nd quarter media break, and then a fastbreak layup by Amanda Torres put the 'Cats up to 20 points to SBU's 21.
- Stony Brook held its lead around four points for the remainder of the half until two free throws by Torres cut into it with six seconds left, and the two teams would go into halftime with a score of 28-26.
- New Hampshire took its first lead early in the third quarter; a layup by Ashley Storey would count as the first points of the second half and after Stony Brook answered back with a layup on the next position, Caroline Soucy buried a three-pointer to puts the 'Cats up 31-30.
- The points margin stuck around a single basket, UNH leading by as much as three toward the end of the frame, and the Wildcats held a 39-37 lead going into the final quarter.
- It was a defensive battle to start the fourth, with neither team scoring until 7:01 remaining in the quarter, a pair of Stony Brook free throws tied the game up at 39-39.
- After a layup by Soucy, the Wildcats led 41-39, but the Seawolves would retake the lead on a layup and free throw on their next two possessions.
- With the score 48-46 with 2:31 remaining, the Wildcats were able to tie the game back up on their next possession on a layup by Storey, tying the game at 48-all.
- The ensuing free throws for Stony Brook went 1-for-2, giving the Seawolves a one-point advantage. 49-48, with 90 seconds to go.
- A huge block by Storey with five seconds on the shot clock prevented Stony Brook from extending its lead, but with the score 50-48, the Wildcats had the ball stolen during the inbound play, and Stony Brook hit its two free-throws to lead by four.
- Torres drove to the basket to make the final bucket but it wasn't enough to close to gap.
