STORYLINES
Junior forwards Nick Guadarrama and Jayden Martinez both recorded a double-double in the season opener vs. Keene State. Guadarrama's eighth career double-double came on 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Martinez had 14 points and 14 rebounds for his 10th double-double.
Redshirt freshmen guards Blondeau Tchoukuiengo and Nick Johnson had big numbers vs. Keene. Tchoukuiengo recorded career highs in points (18), rebounds (five), assists (four) and steals (four). Johnson, in his collegiate debut, scored 12 points on 6 of 8 shooting from the floor.
Tchoukuiengo was named America East Rookie of the Week on Monday, Nov. 30. In addition to the career-best statistics, he scored the first six points of an 18-0 run that extended a 36-31 lead into a 54-31 advantage.
A couple of Wildcats saw their lengthy streak of consecutive starts come to an end in the season opener. Senior guard Josh Hopkins had started 47 consecutive games (spanning Dec. 30, 2018 to March 7, 2020) and was a DNP vs. Keene State last Wednesday. Sean Sutherlin, another senior guard, had carried a 20-game consecutive start streak into this season. The longest active streak belongs to junior guard Marque Maultsby (15 games).
Guadarrama was the only frontcourt player selected to the five-member America East Preseason All-Conference Team.
UNH was selected third in this year's conference preseason coaches' poll.
New Hampshire is one of seven men's teams in Division I to return 85% or more of the team's points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks.
UNH was one of the most improved teams in the nation spanning the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons. With an improvement of 10 wins, the Wildcats were one of six programs that increased the win total by double digits.
