Torres, Wildcats Fall to Seawolves in Overtime Thriller

The junior forward notched at least one of each defensive stat in the contest.
DURHAM, N.H. – University of New Hampshire junior guard Amanda Torres (Hudson, N.H.) led the UNH women's basketball team to a hard-fought tie at 44-44 after four quarters of play against the Stony Brook University Seawolves. Despite hanging with the Seawolves the entire game, SBU was able to pull away to outscore UNH 9-0 in overtime for its largest lead of the game, and a 53-44 victory.
Stony Brook extends its winning streak to 13 games at 16-1, 4-0 in America East play. The Wildcats suffer their first home conference loss of the season, and fall to 4-12 overall (1-3 AE).
NEXT UP: The Wildcats head on a short road trip next Wednesday and Saturday, facing the UAlbany Great Danes on Wednesday evening (Jan. 15, 7 P.M.) and the UMBC Retrievers on Saturday (Jan. 18, 1 P.M.).

HIGHLIGHTS:
- Torres led the team with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting and a perfect 4-of-4 at the free throw line; she grabbed one offenseive and one defensive rebound for two total, along with three assists, two steals, and a block.
- Senior forward Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine) followed that up with 12 points, going 2-of-5 from behind the arc. Storey also tallied a block shot in the contest.
- Freshman guard Héléna Delaruelle (Enghien-les-Bains, France) was crucial down the stretch for the Wildcats as she hit several big isolated jumpers to keep UNH in the game; she finished with eight points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
- Once gain leading the team in rebounds was junior Maggie Ahearn (Marshfield, Mass.) grabbing eight defensive boards. Ahearn also had a basket, an assist and a steal in the game, ending with two points.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Wildcats started the game off strong defensively, holding Stony Brook to a 20% shooting percentage in the first quarter.
- Amanda Torres led the way for the Wildcats in the first quarter, contributing 6 points and an assist to put UNH on top 9-5 after one quarter.
- The second period, much like the first, was a defensive battle, in which the Wildcats were held to only 6 points.
- Both teams shot under 25% as UNH led Stony Brook 15-13 at halftime.
- The Seawolves came out at halftime looking like a different team, as they were able to put up 14 points in the third quarter while shooting 7-11 from the field.
- The Wildcats were able to keep up with the Seawolves scoring; a three-point shot by Ashley Storey was the difference in the quarter, putting UNH up 28-27 going into the fourth quarter.
- A competitive fourth quarter had the Wildcats poised to pull off the upset against the Seawolves. With a minute remaining in the game Helena Delaruelle hit a mid-range shot from the foul line to tie the game 44-44.
- After a strong defensive possession, UNH controlled the ball with 20 seconds left in the game. Looking to seal the win, Ashley Storey went up for a contested layup, that was unable to fall, sending the game to overtime.
- Stony Brook dominated overtime, as they held the Wildcats scoreless, sealing a 53-44 victory and extending their win streak to 13 games.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- This was the first overtime game UNH has played in since the 2017-18 season. On December 17, 2017 the Wildcats fell on the road to Boston College, 64-55 on OT.
- The 'Cats haven't been overtime winners since the 2016 victory over Northeastern.
- Ahearn's eight rebounds are a new season high, her previous season high came last game at Maine with seven.
- Torres continues her scoring streak; this was the seventh game in the last nine that she's reached double figures. She's averaging 11.2 points per game in that stretch and has led the team in scoring twice this season (once during that stretch.)
