Sliz's Goal and Assist Lifts 'Cats Past #18 Stanford, 3-2

DURHAM, N.H. – Ava Mariani (Easton, Pa.) scored with 2:26 remaining in regulation to lift the University of New Hampshire field hockey team to Friday night's 3-2 victory against 18th-ranked Stanford University at Memorial Field.
Kayla Sliz (Ajax, Ontario) and Finn Caron (Hampton, N.H.) scored goals 17 seconds apart in the third quarter to transform a one-goal deficit into a one-goal lead. Sliz also tallied an assist on Mariani's game-winning goal to finish with a career-high three points.
UNH goalkeeper Jemma Woods (Frimley, England) made four of her six saves in the first half to keep the Wildcats close through 30 minutes. Stanford goalie Kelsey Bing, who was pulled twice late in the game in favor of an extra field player, made four saves.
UNH won its second consecutive game to improve to 2-0 at home and 2-3 overall. Stanford, which entered the game on a four-game win streak, is 4-3.

1st QUARTER
- Jemma Woods made three saves in a scoreless first quarter.
2nd QUARTER
- Five minutes into the second quarter, Nicky Bajus (Lions Bay, British Columbia) made a defensive save on Phoebe Crosthwaite's shot from the top of the circle to keep the game scoreless.
- Crosthwaite scored the first goal of the game with a low shot from the right side to give the Cardinal a 1-0 lead at 26:53.
- With just under 30 seconds on the clock, a blast by Tia Rispante (Sandwich, Mass.) from the top of the circle that trickled just wide of the left post.
3rd QUARTER
- Sliz converted a penalty corner into a goal and 1-1 tie score at 25:59. From the top of the circle, Maura Verleg (Geldrop, Netherlands) pushed a pass to the right side, where Sliz struck a bouncing shot into the cage.
- Just 17 seconds later, Caron charged past a defender along the left end line and scored another goal for the Wildcats to give the home team a 2-1 lead.
4th QUARTER
- Stanford generated a corner two minutes into the final frame and Corinne Zanolli's direct shot went wide of the right post.
- With 3 minutes and 16 seconds left, the Cardinal pulled Bing out of the game.
- Stanford's second goal was scored by Jessica Welch, assisted by Emma Alderton, nine seconds after Bing was pulled.
- UNH regained the lead, 3-2, less than a minute later at 57:34. On a corner, Sliz's direct shot was tipped by Mariani, who was positioned in the middle of the circle, into the cage.
- The Cardinal immediately pulled Bing in favor of an extra field player and generated a corner with 1:40 remaining. Rose Winter's reverse-stick shot from a little left of the top of the circle was kicked away by Woods' right leg pad.
- UNH did not allow the visitors inside the circle the rest of the way to preserve the win.
