Simkevich Stops Eight Shots, Yields Three Goals in 5-0 Loss at #2 Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Rachel Simkevich (Londonderry, N.H.) stopped 8 of 11 shots on goal, but the University of New Hampshire field hockey team lost 5-0 to second-ranked University of Maryland at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex on Sunday.
Simkevich, a sophomore goalkeeper in just her second career start, exited the game at halftime with that .727 save percentage. Freshman goalie Jemma Woods (Frimley, England) made her collegiate debut when she entered the second half; she finished with four saves in her 30-minute relief stint.
Junior back Erin Malone (Crofton, Md.) was credited with a defensive save. Junior midfielder Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands) tallied four of the Wildcats' six shots, and freshman forward Ava Mariani (Easton, Pa.) accounted for the other two.
Madison Maguire led Maryland with one goal, two assists and a defensive save. Bibi Donraadt finished with two goals and an assist. Noelle Frost (50:42) and Skye Joegriner (9:18) combined in goal for the shutout despite not making a save. Belle Bressler was also credited with a defensive save for the Terrapins.
UNH is 0-2 and Maryland is 2-0.

1st QUARTER
- UMD had a 5-0 shot advantage and led 1-0 after 15 minutes.
- Keus scored on a direct shot off a penalty corner at 2:36.
2nd QUARTER
- Donraadt scored goals a little more than two minutes apart – at 21:54 and 24:10 – to quickly extend the home team's lead to 3-0.
3rd QUARTER
- The shots were even, 3-3, and the penalty corners were level at 1 in the scoreless third frame.
- UNH generated a corner in the 41st minute and van den Brekel's shot beat Frost, but Maguire kept the ball out of the cage.
4th QUARTER
- Malone made her defensive save in the 48th minute when she denied Keus.
- Maguire struck at 50:19 and Bleakney scored 23 seconds later to make it 5-0.
- The Wildcats created some their best offensive pressure in the closing minutes. A shot off Mariani's stick was blocked at 58:45 but led to a corner, and that yielded a second corner in which van den Brekel once again bested the Terps' goalie only to be thwarted by a field player – this time it was Bressler.
