Woodhouse, Olsson, Bruneau-Bouchard & Kenney to compete at UVM
INDIANAPOLIS – Four University of New Hampshire skiers have been selected to compete in the 2019 National Collegiate Men's and Women's Skiing Championships, which are being hosted by the University of Vermont on March 6-9.
EISA All-East First Team skier Emma Woodhouse (Collingwood, Ontario) and Lisa Olsson (Stockholm, Sweden) will represent the Wildcat women's alpine team, while UNH men's alpine skiers Will Bruneau-Bouchard (Quebec City, Quebec) and Patrick Kenney (Hingham, Mass.) were also selected by the NCAA Men's and Women's Skiing Committee.
"I'm very happy to be heading into the NCAA championships with four qualified skiers," said 12th-year alpine head coach Brian Blank. "It took strong results to qualify and all four of them are capable All-American performers."
Alpine events will be held Thursday, March 7 (giant slalom) and Saturday, March 9 (slalom). Nordic races are slated for Wednesday, March 6, and Friday, March 8, at Trapp Family Lodge, though no Wildcats will compete in Nordic action.
Woodhouse will compete at NCAAs for the second time in her career. The junior co-captain earned the No. 5 East ranking. The Collingwood, Ontario, native was ranked fifth in SL with her top results coming at the St. Lawrence Carnival (second), the UNH Carnival (third) and the UVM Carnival (third). Her No. 8 GS ranking included a season-best second-place finish at St. Lawrence and fourth place at UNH. In all, Woodhouse registered six Top-5 finishes and placed in the Top 10 in 11 of the season's 12 races. In 2017, the then-freshman was UNH's top finisher in women's GS (21st) at the NCAA Championships, which UNH hosted at Cannon Mountain.
Olsson, a freshman, qualified as a result of her No. 13 EISA ranking. In, GS, the native of Stockholm, Sweden, was ranked 12th with top finishes at UVM (sixth) and Dartmouth (sixth). Olsson was ranked 14th in SL, with top results at UNH (eighth) and St. Lawrence (ninth). She capped the EISA season with six Top-10s.
Bruneau-Bouchard parlayed a No. 8 SL ranking and a No. 24 GS ranking into No. 12 overall in the East. Three of his four Top-10s came in SL, including a tie for fourth place at St. Lawrence and fifth at UNH. He also recorded his top GS result (10th) at the UNH Carnival.
As the East's No. 19 alpine racer, Kenney returns to the NCAAs for the second consecutive season. The sophomore did his best work in GS, where he earned a No. 15 ranking by virtue of an eighth-place finish at UVM and a tie for sixth at Dartmouth for his two Top-10 placements of the season. He finished in 20th place in SL and 23rd in GS at last year's national championships, hosted by the University of Colorado at Steamboat Ski Resort.
The Wildcats have recorded 26 NCAA Top-10 finishes in ski coordinator Cory Schwartz's 37 years coaching at UNH.
